A Welcome from The President

An old Chinese poem reads 'the sunrise brings the brilliance of the flowers, and the coming of the spring gives the rivers sparklingly blue'.  Today Harbin Institute of Technology is in this life-giving spring, and we are witnessing all the great developments in our university as a result of the efforts of our staff and students. We are seeing increasing funds and great achievements in our academic and research works and the smooth progress in our participation both in the '21st Century 100 Excellent Universities in China' project and in the 'Combining Efforts in Universities' Key Development Fields' project. We are happy to say that with our achievements in teaching and researching, our university is gaining more and more influence in the academic world.

The 21st century is the century of knowledge, but it is also the century of challenges and opportunities. Faced with the opportunities and fierce competitions, we are determined to move forward as we know there is no hope in looking back. We must put all our efforts and minds together to make our university into an international, comprehensive, up-to-date, world-class university with its clear distinctions.

In order to make our university an international one we must open up to the world and join in the competitions in China's post WTO era. The world's best universities are all comprehensive ones which emphasize researches. And this will be our line of thinking in our university's future plans. We hope that based on a full coverage and the strong foundations of basic disciplines in arts, science and applied fields, we will have a few areas that are influential and highly competitive in the world.

In order to keep up with the development of universities in the world HIT must rely on its academic achievements and its teaching staff. With our strengths in national defense, space travel and other distinguished fields we will put our efforts together and stride on towards the frontier of the academic world.
