President Zhou Yu Attended the First International Engineering Education Forum and Gave a Keynote Report

Harbin Institute of Technology (Undergraduate College Text / Photo) From September 24th to 25th, the first International Engineering Education Forum (IFEE 2018), co-sponsored by Tsinghua University, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and UNESCO, was held at Tsinghua University. Important guests who attended the forum included Li Xiaohong, Dean of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Honorary Chairman of the Presidium of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the UNESCO International Engineering Education Center; Zhou Ji, Director of the UNESCO Office in Beijing; Ou Minxing, Director of the UNESCO International Engineering Education Center; Wu Qidi, World Engineering Organization; Gong Ke, the president of the Federation; and Li Peigen, chairman of the China Mechanical Engineering Society. President Zhou Yu was invited to attend the forum and gave a keynote speech entitled “Challenges and Responses to Engineering Education”.

Zhou Yu expounded on the challenges facing engineering education from the perspectives of the development of the times, scientific and technological progress, and innovation. He pointed out that the development needs of the times are the motives of engineering education reform, and that scientific and technological progress is a powerful impetus to enhance the connotation of engineering education. What’s more, the cultivation of innovative practical ability is the essential feature of engineering education. Based on the engineering education practice of Harbin Institute of Technology, Zhou Yu pointed out that the development of engineering education must keep pace with the times, and higher education institutions need to intensify reforms in terms of professional construction, systems of curriculum, and training methods. First-class engineering education must be closely integrated with scientific and technological progress so that science and engineering are developing on the same channel, and to achieve the integration of scientific research and teaching. The cultivation of innovative practical ability is the main theme of contemporary first-class engineering education, and it is the essential feature of engineering education, which must be compatible with the development of the times and the progress of science and technology.

With the theme of “Innovative Development of Engineering Education”, this forum aimed to bring together world-renowned scholars and outstanding leaders in engineering education, engineering technology, and engineering management so that they can discuss the innovative development of engineering education and promote the progress of world engineering technology and that of the whole society. The forum focused on the challenges of engineering education and first-class engineering construction, new models of cooperation between industry, universities and research institutes, engineering practical ability training, engineering education for sustainable development, artificial intelligence and engineering education innovation, international cooperation and engineering education innovation, as well as the practice of engineering education. Global dialogue was held on issues such as entrepreneurship education, engineering ethics education, and engineering education diversity. The presidents or representatives from leading universities, such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Royal Institute of Technology, and the University of Tokyo, made keynote reports. More than 50 experts, scholars, and business representatives participated in group presentations and discussions, and more than 150 experts and scholars attended the forum.
