Strategic Symposium on the Science of Space Environment and Material Effects and Opening Ceremony of the Institute of Space Environment and Material Science

On January 12, the first strategic seminar on " Science of Space Environment and Material Effects" and the opening ceremony of the Institute of Space Environment and Material Science (hereinafter referred to as "ISEMS") was held in the 201 Lecture Hall of the International Conference Center. Academician Han Jiecai, executive vice president and chief designer of the big science project, unveiled the board for the institute.

Vice President Xu Dianguo said in his speech that as a basic research platform for space technology and space science, the national major science and technology infrastructure of the space environment ground simulation device (hereinafter referred to as the "big science project ") is a major upgrade to China's current basic research conditions in this field, and will become the first large device to comprehensively study the coupling effect of multi-factor space environment. It is of great significance in revealing deep scientific laws, forming an international aerospace evaluation standard system with independent intellectual property rights, and solving the world's major aerospace technology and space science problems. The establishment of ISEMS has offered an unprecedented historical opportunity to deeply integrate into the "One Belt and One Road" construction and the arctic strategy, undertaking the historical mission of building a space power, a science and technology power, and an innovative country. Facing the new trend and transformation in the new era, we hope that relying on the overall layout of "one school, three areas", ISEMS will introduce and cultivate talents to build a high-level scientific research team. ISEMS will develop a new direction and mechanism of interdisciplinary cooperation to build an international first-class scientific research platform. By doing so, ISEMS can make greater contributions to the progress of China's aerospace science and technology.

Zhang Tielong, representative of the Scientific and Technological Advisory Committee, academician of the International Academy of Astronautics, and lifelong senior researcher of the Institute of Space Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences; Xu Min, representative of the User Committee, director of the Fusion Science Research Institute of the Southwest Institute of Physics of nuclear industry[LM1] ; Wang Shujuan, dean of the Institute of Electrical Engineering; and Li Liyi, dean of ISEMS, addressed the meeting respectively.

After the opening ceremony, Tang Min, a researcher from the aerospace material support business department of the Fifth Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology group; Qin Gang, a professor from the Shenzhen campus of our university; and Li Yingxian, a researcher from the China aerospace scientific research and training center, were invited to make a report during the conference.

The conference will set up sub venues for radiation effect research of space environmental materials, devices, and systems, and sub venues for space life science and space physics. Experts and scholars from the Aerospace Science and Technology group, the Aerospace Science and Engineering group, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and other institutions, as well as other universities, including Peking University, attended the meeting. Through special reports and group discussions, they discussed and exchanged academic, cutting-edge and technological progress in the field of space materials, devices, systems, life, plasma, ground simulation of space environment, and other hot issues.

At the meeting, the propaganda video of ISEMS was broadcast, and more than 50 congratulatory messages from domestic and foreign universities, scientific research institutes, and functional departments were read out.

It is known that the big science project of our university is the national key planned project during the 12th Five Year Plan period as well as the first major national science and technology infrastructure project in northeast China. Besides, the project is also an important part of the overall layout of the regional innovation system in Heilongjiang Province. The preparation for the construction of the big science project started in 2005, was officially approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in 2015, and started in 2017. In July 2019, in order to ensure the long-term planning and development of the big science project, HIT established ISEMS, and identified the institute as the "execution center" for the construction and operation of the big science project, the "strategic platform" for the transformation and upgrading of the school's basic research, and the "experimental base" for the innovation of the school's system and mechanism. Relying on the big science project and facing the current situation of China's aerospace and space science development, the research institute carries out basic scientific research and cross integration development around materials, physics, chemistry, electricity, machinery and other disciplines to promote the overall revitalization of Heilongjiang Province. Moreover, it helps China make the leap from "aerospace country" to "aerospace power".
