President ZHOU Yu Leads Delegation to Visit Russia to Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Joint Campus Construction between China and Russia in St. Petersburg, Harbin Institute of Technology

Newsletter of Harbin University of Technology (article/photo by MEI Wenzhang)  The 20th meeting of the China-Russia Committee for Cultural Cooperation was held in St. Petersburg, Russia, on the morning of September 16. The meeting was co-chaired by SUN Chunlan, vice premier of the State Council and Chinese chairman of the China-Russia Council for Cultural Cooperation, and Gorykova, Russian vice premier and chairman of the Council. President ZHOU Yu was invited to attend the meeting, and witnessed by the leaders of the two countries, signed a memorandum of understanding with President Korobachev of St. Petersburg State University on co-hosting the "Sino-Russian Joint Campus of St. Petersburg University of Technology" in Harbin.

The delegation held working talks with Korobachev on the follow-up to the construction of the Sino-Russian joint campus. Korobachev said that in recent years, relying on the Sino-Russian Joint Research Center and the representative office of St. Petersburg University, the two sides have achieved fruitful cooperation in personnel training, scientific research, academic exchanges, and other fields. The signing of the Joint Campus Cooperation Agreement, witnessed by the vice premiers of the two countries, marks a new level of cooperation between the two sides.

President ZHOU Yu briefed the Russian side on the latest progress of the Sino-Russian joint campus construction project. He said that the Heilongjiang Provincial People's Government fully supports the construction of the joint campus. On April 23, 2019, Governor WANG Wentao of Heilongjiang Province presided over a special meeting on the Sino-Russian Joint Campus Project between St. Petersburg State University and Harbin University of Technology. He hoped that China and Russia would continue to uphold the cooperative concept of "sincerity, precision, and meticulousness", speed up the construction of joint campuses, devote themselves to building a science and education park where Chinese and Russian culture, history, and modern culture blend, and set an example of Sino-Russian cooperation in running schools, scientific and technological innovation, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges.

During the talks, the two sides also had an in-depth exchange of views on such topics as joint declaration of Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run schools, as well as future plans for joint campuses, scientific research cooperation, and funding support.

ZHOU Yu also attended a round-table forum of presidents of China-Russia comprehensive universities held at St. Petersburg State University of Economics, and delivered a keynote speech entitled "Seizing the Strategic Opportunity of Linking the ‘Silk Road Economic Belt’ with the ‘Eurasian Economic Union’, Condensing Our Heart and Focusing Our Efforts to Create a New Era of Scientific and Cultural Exchanges between China and Russia's Universities--Cooperation and Prospects." Based on the Sino-Russian comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation in the new era and the "2020-2021 Sino-Russian Year of Scientific and Technological Innovation", he introduced the characteristics and achievements of the cooperation between our university and Russia, and put forward some suggestions on the future cooperation between the universities of the two countries. The presidents and vice-presidents of 21 universities from China and Russia attended the forum and made speeches.

Relevant responsible persons of the Ministry of International Cooperation and the Undergraduate College participated in the above activities.
