Living in HIT
The dormitories located on both campuses are altogether 19 buildings, with floor area of 280,000 square meters, and providing residence for 25000 students, who sign a contract with the institute, which buys and washes the beddings together.Undergraduates live in rooms of 4 to 8 people; master candidates stay in rooms of 2-6, and doctoral students in rooms of 2-3.
Dormitories are also important in educating students, and they are windows to display the institute.The institute attaches great importance to the construction, management, reform, and development of the student dormitories.Since the year 2002, the institute has invested 150 million yuan in building 6 new dormitories, 11678000 yuan in refurbishing 5 dorms, and 15 million yuan for the purchase and renewal of furniture, which has rapidly improved the living conditions and facilities.In the rooms, IC card operated telephones are installed, and the dormitory buildings set aside TV rooms, reading rooms, and for some dorms kitchens, and book bars.Other dorms offered maintenance and laundry services, and opened supermarkets.Some new dorm buildings also include fitness centers and saloons of high tastes, which render students space for entertainment.
In March 2002, the administration of the HIT dorms passed the ISO9001 international standard quality management system.The dorms follow the guiding principle ’strict requirements in management and perfect quality of service' and urge the stuff to provide convenient, prompt, kindly, standard service and advocate that students in residence form polite, healthy, friendly, and up-going morality.
Now, the dorms have become modernized living quarters at once incorporating relaxation, studying, and entertainment.
A13 Dorm is also known as International Students' Dorm . It wa
s put into use on November 1 st 2002. the floor space is 13255 square meters. There are meeting room, study room, cloth-washing room, entertainment area and other functioning rooms. The facilities are well equipped. There are all together 168 suites or 304 rooms in the dorm. The dorm is capable to hold 494 people. The hall of the dorm is 262 square meters, and on its left is a service table, which provides services around the clock and be responsible for all the matters of the dorm. There are four sets of leather sofa for entertainment or meeting friends. On the wall of the hall there are three telephones on which IC or IP cards can be used. There are tables and chairs on circular corridor on the second floor. Students can study or communicate with each other there. There are public washroom and fire-control center on the left corridor of the first floor. The fire-control center sets a watchman day and night in case of emergency. On the left of the corridor on the second floor, there are public washroom and cloth-washing room. The washing room provides six automatic washing machines. Students can purchase IC cards at the service table and with the IC cards they can use washing machines. The machine will wash clothes for 41 minutes one time, and the price for each time is 2.50 Yuan. The price is proper and the service is good. On the right side of the corridor on second floor, there is a meeting room with four sets of sofa and a piano, which is an ideal place for cultural exchange. On the left there is a study room with 24 tables and two porcelain boards, which can hold 48 students for a class. The dorm is 16-storey. There are 11 suites of rooms on each floor except the first and second floor. There are single and double rooms. The floor space of single room is 23 sqm, and double room 29.2 sqm. The rooms are up to national standards. There are elegant furniture, lights, electric stove, TV, card-using telephones in the room together with water-heating machines, washing tubs, hangers and other facilities. The dorm also provides each room with cable TV line and web line. All these facilities are for the convenience of students.

Chinese Universities, HIT enjoys great fame for its dining halls among other things, which have been awarded consecutively by the Ministry of Education’Best Dining Halls'.In Spring 1997, the HITStudentDiningCenter was put into use, with an area of 11000 squared meters and 23
60 seats, including Dining Hall No. 1, No. 2, the Muslim Dining Hall, Convenience Cafeteria, Self-Service Cafeteria, and the Relish Cafeteria.In March 2002, another new dining hall building was completed with 18000 square meters of floor coverage, 3000 seats, and advanced facilities: the escalator from the first floor through third floor, modernized kitchen, imported rice assembly line, the card operated ca
shier machine, and the thoroughly sterilized dishes and plates.
Besides, according to the demands of different student customers, various kinds of dining halls are offered: the Relish Cafeteria offer Cantonese, Shichuan, and Shandong dishes; the Self-Service Cafeteria gives you enough freedom of choice with the big tray; the
Gown and Home Cafeteria makes you feel at home with restaurant service; and at the Feature Dining Hall, you can have a pretty good meal with an average of less than 2 yuan.The endless pursuit of the Dining Hall workers lies in the satisfaction of the students and their determination to always surpass yesterday.
HIT has two modernized libraries with a floor-coverage of 41,000 square meters.
The libraries host a collection of 1,750,000 books, 5000 periodicals, and 200,000 microfiches, tapes, and other non-print documents, forming a multi-disciplinary and multi-media-form library system.All the documents are open to the students, and the library accommodates 4000 seats with computerized management.
In recent years, with the development and application of new technologies in computer, multimedia, communications, and the Internet, the information acquiring and servicing rendering in the library have been greatly enhanced.
The library has an echelon of professional librarians, with sound structure and very strong research and managing ability, which help the library itself to incessantly improve and serve further reform and development of the institute.

The HIT Gym is a
modern building embodying great artistic beauty, composed of a tidy gymnastics hall, a fully equipped competition hall, and a spacious body-building hall.The competition hall has a coverage of 6300 squared meters and can accommodate 2800 people.The stands are equipped with red, orange, blue, an
d green seats of glass fiber reinforced plastic, which is conducive to the spectators�enthusiasm.The hall also has a huge TV screen and a color electronic score display opposite it, which can display various languages, fonts, and images.The hall is good for the training and competition of various international and domestic games of single events: basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, handball, gymnastics, and indoor soccer.The gym has hosted the National Graduate Students Badminton Competition, the National High School Basketball Games, China Basketball Association Series B Events, the Ellison Cup Table Tennis Games, and the 2001 World Women’s Volle
yball Grand Prix.
In addition, HIT also has large areas of outdoor sports facilities: two field and track stadiums, 13 basketball courts, 10 volleyball courts, and three soccer fields.During the winter, ice rinks for speed and figure skating and ice hockey fields are available, while in the summer, two swimming pools are open.

HIT has recently built a new stadium, which is by far the largest in area among Chin
ese universities, with more than 10000 seats, designed and constructed according to the latest standard provided by the Technique Committee of the International Field and Track Association.The stadium holds standard plastic racetracks and standard competition fields.The plan of the stadium is in the shape of an olive leaf, which is unique in the field of architecture in China.In order to make it multi-functional, the designers added 4000 sqare meters of auxiliary training halls under the stands for winter use.
Psychological Consulting Center of Harbin Institute of Technology was established in 1992. The center provides services of consultancy, instruction and education on mental health. The floor area of the center is over 180 square meters

The center can provide individual psychological consulting, group consulting, individual psychological test, and group psychological test. It will also deliver optional courses of mental health and lectures by experts in psychology. Alongside the services, the center also has its own web and psychological consulting web page on the campus net, through which students may obtain consultancy and discuss the related matters on the net.
The center now employs eight psychologists (both fulltime and part-time) and is equipped with cursor-reading machine, cerebral wave treatment machine and various software for psychological test. Students may have alternative in choosing the way of consultancy and tests. Students can receive consultancy in consulting room, through telephone, conduct network psychological tests or psychological consultancy on net.

The Management Center of Student Dorm will provide the following public service facilities:
Study room, clothes-drying room, cloth-washing room, kitchen, television room, book bar, card-and-chess room and ping-pang room.
The details of each facility will be provided below.
Study rooms are in the dorms for students to study there. The dorms on campus one with study rooms are as follows: A01, A02, A03, A04, A05, A06, A07, A08, A09, A10, A11, A12, A13. The dorms on campus two with study rooms are as follows: B02, B03, B05, B06, B07.
The study rooms provide convenience to students and help maintain good order in the dorm.
The clerk in each dorm will clean study rooms periodically and collect the objects used for possessing sets. Clerks will check on the chairs, lights and electric appliances. Reparation is available if needed. When there is no one in the room, clerks shall turn off lights.
Students shall obey the rules in study rooms to keep the rooms clean. They shall not shout, scrabble, or put bags on the seat when the person is not there. The last one leaves the room should turn off the lights and lock the door. The study rooms are only available to the students living there. >>
The room provides space for students to dry their clothes. The students living in dorms with in-room washroom can use both the drying room and their washroom to dry their clothes.
The room is usually located in the room, on the corridor or on the balcony.
Clerks is responsible for cleaning the rooms periodically, reminding students to collect their clothes and to dry the clothes after they are drained in the machine.
Students shall obey the following rules: to dry clothes after water is drained, to collect the dry clothes in time, not to take away others�properties and to keep the room clean. >>
The washing room can set up card-sliding machine or coin-inserting machine according to the number of students living in the dorm.
The using instruction of washing machine will put up in the room to guide students.
The rooms should be clean and well ventilated. The air should be fresh, temperature suitable and sunshine should be sufficient in the room. Washing machines requires periodically check and reparation to ensure the functioning of machines. Clerks shall clean and sterilize machines on time. Clerks are responsible for checking the functioning of machines and deal with related problems. They shall register the lost properties and keep them for students.
The rooms will be opened and closed according to timetable and the students with healthy problems may get tailored services. >>
The kitchen will provide several new facilities to save time and efforts for students. The rooms are well received by students.
Usually there are microwave ovens, dining tables and chairs in every kitchen, and smoke-draining machines and sinks are installed in some particular dorms. The dorm will take on the responsibility of checking and repairing micro-wave ovens to insure its function.
The clerks shall guarantee the ventilation and air quality, and make sure that the lighting, circuits, switches, and ovens are functioning properly. They shall also clean and sterilize the ovens and tables periodically to insure the kitchens are in good sanitary conditions.
Students should read instructions, keep the kitchen clean and shall not damage the facilities.
Except for several dorms, kitchens will be opened and closed according to timetable. If students have special needs, kitchens should be available at any time. >>
To enrich students�life, TV rooms are installed in the dorm, which are also the most frequented place.
There is one TV set and several rows of chairs in the room. The clerks will check the lighting, circuits, and switches periodically and maintain the proper functions of these facilities. They shall clean the room everyday to keep the ventilation, air and temperature good.
Students are not supposed to make noises, stand while watching or searching channels with the buttons on TV. Remote control is available if the student deposits his or her Certificate of Student to the dorm.
The open time of TV room is from 19:00 to 23:00, Monday through Friday, and on Saturday and Sunday, the room is open through 08:00 to 23:00. when it is time to close the room, clerks shall inform students. >>
The bar is convenient for students to read inside the dorm. . >>
The room exemplifies new features on campus. The room will be available only in men’s dorm. The room provides jump chess, Chinese chess, the game of go, military chess, cards and other games to students for entertainment.
Clerks will clean and sterilize both the room and the game facilities periodically to guarantee the health of students.
When playing games, students shall try to keep the room clean and protect facilities. If the facilities are damaged, compensation of equal price is required.
The opening time may vary according to the rules of different dorms.
The security unit feels obliged to make the following announcements for the students�safety.
1. Check before leaving your room if the door is securely locked and window is closed;
2. Do not keep valuables such as mobile phone, electronic dictionaries in your bag;
3. Keep alert in the dinning hall;
4. Save money in the bank and remember the code in case someone uses your deposit book;
5. Do not lend room key to others in case it is duplicated;
6. Make sure the door is locked at night in case someone steals things while you are sleeping;
7. If the room has been broken into, do not panic, remember to keep the site intact and report to the police;
Report to the police on seeing the suspect.
