On Nov. 7th, the 2012 Conference on Government-Sponsored HIT Students and Teachers Studying Abroad met. Assistant President XU Dianguo presided.
During the conference, Vice President REN Nanqi reported on 1) the conference participants’ commitment to globalization, 2) conditions of HIT teachers and students studying abroad, as well as 3) future conference goals and objectives. REN stressed that HIT would focus more on sending teachers, especially young teachers, to pursue further education abroad in order to significantly increase the proportion of HIT teachers with study abroad experience. In addition, HIT will continue to follow the examples of other world-class universities in better preparing CSC government-sponsored graduate students for studying abroad. Greater CSC Project funding will open up more channels for HIT undergraduates to study abroad. HIT will encourage outstanding undergraduates to take advantage of these various study and exchange opportunities, in order to enhance their intercultural communication competence.
XU Xiaofei, Assistant to the President, reported on 1) the status of HIT’s 2011-2012 "Plan to Improve College Student Foreign Language Proficiency and Cross-cultural Competence" 2) the measures for further improvement moving forward, as well as 3) the International Cultural Center planning. He proposed that as one of the China’s top universities, HIT should take responsibility for cultivating our country’s finest internationally competitive talent. Through strategic partnerships, international faculty exchanges, cooperative research projects, joint-degree programs, foreign student programs, study abroad programs, international conferences, and foreign language teaching, HIT will soon be recognized for its top-ranking innovative education that develops the highest-quality internationally competitive talent.
MU Yongguo, Director of the Personnel Department, reported on "The Working and Studying Conditions abroad of Government-Sponsored HIT Teachers" while KANG Jun, Deputy Director General of the Graduate School’s Educational Research and Quality Management Agency reported on "The status of Government-Sponsored Graduate Students". Both HIT’s “Independent Examination and Approval Authority to conduct Foreign Affairs” and the “Criteria for Selecting Outstanding HIT undergraduates to Study Abroad” were explained by the International Office Director, FAN Hongbo, and Deputy Director General ZHENG Mingdong respectively.
Beginning in 2012, China will set up a CSC government-sponsored program for undergraduates to study abroad. 1000 outstanding undergraduates will be supported to study abroad for 3 to 12 months the project’s first year. Depending upon the program’s success, the number of supported students may increase in subsequent years.
