October 26th recipients of the 2011 Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) PhD Fellowship were announced at the thirteenth 21st Century Computing - International Academic Research and Discussion Conference, where two HIT School of Computer Science (SCS) students CUI Lei and SUN Xiaoshuai, accompanied by their supervisors Professor ZHAO Tiejun and Professor YAO Hongxun, respectively, were among the recipients honored as 2011 MSRA Fellows.

The award committee received applications from 102 doctoral candidates from 42 Asia-Pacific universities and research institutes, including China, Japan, Korea and Singapore. With even more rigorous selection criteria, the prestige of this award continues to grow. After fierce competition, 29 students won the coveted MSRA Fellowship. Rick Rashid, Senior Vice President of Microsoft Research, and Hsiao-Wuen Hon, Managing Director of Microsoft Research Asia, conferred the awards upon the 17 Fellows from Mainland China, as well as their supervisors. Since its inception in 1999, the program has attracted approximately 850 PhD candidates from 50 universities in the Asia-Pacific region, and 341 PhD students have received honors or a scholarship.

The Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship Program aims to empower and encourage PhD students in the Asia-Pacific region to realize their potential in computer science-related research. We recognize outstanding junior PhD students majoring in computer science, electrical engineering, information science, and applied mathematics.

Each winner will receive a $6,000 award which can be used to support research initiatives and academic endeavors including, but not limited to attending international research conference/events, paper publication fees, patent application fees, and attending the Fellowship Reunion Meeting organized by MSRA one year after receiving the fellowship. Each Fellow has the opportunity to complete an internship during which they participate in hands-on, advanced research at Microsoft Research Asia’s Beijing lab. To date, more than 168 Fellows have interned and more than 30 Fellows have joined Microsoft Research Asia as researchers after graduation.

HIT’s SCS values and cultivates its graduate students’ scientific innovative abilities, stressing research originality and depth of theoretical knowledge. Solid theory, diligent research, practical application, and innate student ability have contributed to SCS’ exceptional reputation among its peers and throughout the worldwide IT industry. HIT ranks among the top Asia-Pacific universities with 16 MSRA Fellows to date.
