From April 8th to October 23rd,  Innovate Asia - Altera Design Contest 2011 was held throughout Mainland China and the Taiwan Region. After a series of close competitions, the HIT team comprised of Professor Xiuling YANG, School of Electrical Engineering and Automation postgraduates ZHANG Zhendong and ZHANG Chuanyu, and School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering student MENG Baolu won both the top Mainland China Special Award and the Cross-strait Grand Champion Award.

The Cross-strait Final Contest was held at Chongqing University, October 23rd, when the top five Mainland China and Taiwan Region finalists presented their projects to the FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) experts and professors from Mainland China and Taiwan Region.

HIT’s IP-Based (Image Processing) Professor’s Cube Robot Project, designed a robot which can automatically solve a Professor’s Cube. The three students completed the project’s electrical, mechanical systems and the core control algorithm. The 280 FPGA experts nationwide voted HIT’s team the Cross-strait Grand Champion. They agreed that this project gives prominence to the hardware/software co-design, attesting to the team’s innovative ability.  The design integrates the digital image processing, logical analysis, operations, and mechanical control in order to provide stable performance.

In its eighth consecutive year, the 2011 Innovate Asia-Altera Design Contest is the premier FPGA design contest providing a platform for students from Motor, Informatics and other science majors. The initial contests are held separately in Mainland China and the Taiwan Region, from which the top five winning teams from each region compete in the Cross-strait Grand Championship. The Mainland China Special Award winning team receives¥10,000, with an additional ¥2,000 awarded to their supervisor. Each of the two First Prize teams receive ¥5,000, with another ¥1,000 for each supervisor. Five Second Prize teams receive ¥2,000 and eight Third Prize teams receive ¥1,000 each. This year’s contest attracted over 300 entries from nearly a hundred universities, including HIT, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhongshan University, National Taiwan University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, I-Shou University and National Chiao Tung University.
