December 18, 2011, President WANG Shuguo was among approximately 70 university presidents from around the world who attended the Presidents Summit - East Meets West: Synergy, Competition or Collaboration convened in the historic Loke Yew Hall as part of the University of Hong Kong’s (HKU) 100th centennial celebration. Honored guests included presidents from Hong Kong, mainland and overseas universities including: Harbin Institute of Technology, Tsinghua University, Peking University, The University of British Columbia, The University of Chicago and King's College London.
This Presidents Summit is an opportunity for university leaders from around the world to discuss issues impacting higher education including competition and collaboration, internationalization, mass vs. elite education, and public vs. private funding.
Participants remarked that internationalization was changing global higher education in many regards. Eastern and western cultures are colliding, producing new information, new paradigms, new concepts and new innovations. Only by seeking collaboration in the midst of competition can higher education achieve win-win outcomes in the current globalized environment. President WANG participated in the group discussion regarding University Funding: Public vs. Private. and exchanged views with the other participants. The presidents shared views on challenges and opportunities faced by higher education.
