From December 5th to 8th, 2011, the 3rd International Conference on Smart Materials and Nanotechnology in Engineering (SMN2011) was convened at Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. This conference, organized by HIT and co-organized by International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE, USA), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, USA) as well as other seven institutions, was a significant international academic meeting on smart materials and nanotechnology in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) Member DU Shanyi, and Ken P. Chong, the Member of Society of Experimental Mechanics (SEM) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the previous program director of Mechanics and Materials at National Science Foundation (NSF) acted as the conference honorary chairs; HIT School of Astronautics Professor LENG Jinsong served as the chair; NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory Doctor Yoseph Bar-Cohen, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) Professor In Lee (Transliteration) and City University of Hong Kong Professor Jian LU were the co-chairs. More than 220 experts from 15 countries such as Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany and U.S. were invited to this conference.

SMN 2011 centered around the theme Smart Material and Nanotechnology, setting up 32 sessions, in which 31 renowned scholars gave invited speeches. At the general sessions, participants discussed and exchanged views on smart materials and its research findings and application covering shape- memory alloys and polymer, electric active polymers, piezoelectric materials, electro-chromic, photo-chromic and thermo-chromic materials, and optical fiber sensor technology for multi-scale structural health monitoring The exhibited 260 papers picked out from 450 manuscripts fully reflected the research status quo in this field home and broad. As an encouragement to the young scholars, the Conference Academic Committee selected two Excellent Student Paper Awards. The papers will be published by SPIE and included in full text by Engineering Index (EI, USA).
At the general session, 8 prestigious scholars gave invited lectures including Dr. Yoseph Bar-Cohen, Professor In Lee, Professor LU Jian, Professor Ken P. Chong, Professor Donald J. Leo, the Member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Professor of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Professor LIU Jiande, the University of Queensland, Australia, Professor David Orpheus of the University of Wollongong, Australia. Professor FANG Daining, the Vice-President of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM).
In its third consecutive year, SMN 2011 offered a high-standard academic platform for the participants in this field, enhancing the communication on smart materials and nanotechnology domestically and overseas. Discussed and decided primarily by the Committee, the 4th International Conference on Smart Materials and Nanotechnology in Engineering will be held at the Gold Coast, Australia in July, 2013.
