March 14th, WANG Shuguo, President of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) and Deputy to the National People’s Congress, returned from the 5th session of the 11th National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China to an interview with HIT Campus News.

President WANG said it was “inspirational to attend the conference” and went on to say that “Premier WEN Jiabao’s Report on the Work of the Government stated that:
‘--[We should] thoroughly implement the strategies of developing China through science and education and strengthen the country through human resource development. To make China prosperous and strong and achieve the revival of the Chinese nation, we need to vigorously develop science, technology, and education and create a high-quality talent pool. We will continue to give high priority to developing education. The Central Government has already prepared its budget to meet the requirement that government spending on education account for 4% of China's GDP.’”

Related supporting national ministries strongly emphasize the sustainable development of education. WANG commented that, the responsibility of developing China through scientific and technological education was not only a great inspiration for educators, but also a new challenge and mission in light of the new circumstances. He called on faculty and administrators to provide students with more diverse, equitable and higher-quality education by continuing to focus on teaching, fully implementing the “National Outline for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development”, strengthening staff development, promoting social sustainable development, and promoting the scientific development of educational programs.

While in Beijing for the 5th Session of the National People’s Congress, President WANG also granted an exclusive interview to state media, sharing HIT’s many recent achievements as well as educational reform innovations and experience.
