March 27th, Vice President REN Nanqi, Deputy Dean LIANG Dapeng, School of Management, and Deputy Director Wang Xiuheng, International Office welcomed Annika Melander, Head of the Economic & Finance Section of the EU Delegation to China and her delegation to Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT).
The EU Delegation in Beijing, with full diplomatic privileges and immunities, has represented the European Union in China since October 1988. It is responsible for the conduct of official relations between China and the European Community. In all matters pertaining to the European Union, the Delegation works closely with the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States, particularly the one representing the EU Presidency, which changes every six months. The Delegation is a natural point of contact between the EU and the Chinese authorities as well as others in China. The Delegation keeps the European Union abreast of significant political, economic and other developments in China and facilitates the operation and development of bilateral co - operation agreements.
REN introduced HIT, reviewing the history of international exchanges and collaboration between HIT and EU universities. Melander spoke highly of HIT's achievements and its contribution to China's development. She acknowledged HIT’s cooperation with EU universities and expressed her hope that HIT will continue to broaden its cooperation throughout the EU thereby strengthening communication between China and the EU.
Following the meeting, Melander offered a lecture to students and faculty on the history and development of the Euro. Drawing upon her experience as former EU Economic Analyst and Forecaster, she addressed the European debt crisis discussing its relationship to the broader world economic crisis. Afterwards she entertained questions from the audience.
