May 17th, LI Xin (female), Central Conservatory of Music Associate Professor and Host of CCTV Music Channel’s Program Music Speaks-Piano Class, delivered a piano lecture at HIT, during which her students LI Xin (male) and LI Jiarong performed several pieces of piano music for students.

Professor LI first described the developing history of the piano in China and taught some basic music knowledge, including notes and keys, to the audience.

Pianist Li Xin (male) began his performance with China’s popular folk tune Liuyang He, which is inspired by the Liuyang River and nearby village of Shaoshan where Chairman Mao was born. Another pianist LI Jiarong joined for the second part of the song: one was responsible for soprano and another for alto. The two melodies blended perfectly.

During intervals in the music, Professor LI (female) referenced her students’ performance to explain the importance of piano intros in determining the theme and emotion of the whole song. She also described how using various octaves can influence a song’s mood.

As an encore, Pianist LI Xin (male) performed La Campanella, composed by Hungarian Pianist Franz Liszt, and The Crave, the interlude from the Hollywood blockbuster, The Legend of 1900.

“Although most of you here major in science or engineering, I wish today’s performance will arouse your interest in music. Also, I hope everyone could use music to live your life to the fullest,” said Professor LI at the end of the concert.
