May 5th, the 5th National Undergraduate Mechanical Innovative Design Competition (UMIC) Heilongjiang division final was held in HIT. At the end of the competition, HIT inventions received 7 of 22 first prizes and 8 of 25 second prizes.
With the theme "A Better Life-Today and Tomorrow", this competition exhibited 48 inventions from 8 universities in Heilongjiang province.
Assistant President XU Xiaofei delivered a speech at the competition’s opening ceremony. On behalf of HIT, he welcomed all the contestants to compete and experience the joy of innovation. He stated that the UMIC promotes students' awareness and ability of innovative design. XU also expressed his hope that, through this competition, contestants would enhance their all-around abilities resulting in more inventions being selected for the national final.
During the competition, the participants presented their inventions and then answered judges’ questions. This was followed by judges’ feedback. Notable inventions from HIT included an energy saving lifting-and-spinning drying rack, a multifunctional vegetable cutter and a chess-playing robot. Compact in structure and environmentally friendly, the drying rack adopts spinning solar panels to shorten the time for drying clothes. The multifunctional vegetable cutter saves time on cooking by quickly slicing vegetables using several different cutting techniques, such as slicing, chopping and shredding. The chess-playing robot is able to compete against human players employing image acquisition combined with an air pump and robotic hand. These novel inventions showcase an advanced knowledge of mechanical control. In the future, some of these inventions, with slight improvements, can be commercialized for everyday use.
