May 12th, Vice President REN Nanqi awared Dr. Robert W. Farquhar as HIT’s Chief International Academic Adviser, who is a member of National Academy of Engineering of America.
The Assistant Dean from School of Astronautical Engineering GAO Huijun presided over the ceremony. Professor JING Wuxing, the Vice Dean of the Department of Astronautical Engineering, delivered Dr. Farquhar’s resume. REN expressed his hope to develop exchanges and collaborations between United States and China. He also presented information about HIT international talent introduction and expressed his hope of Dr. Farquhar’s contribution to HIT’s disciplinary development. Dr. Farquhar spoke highly of HIT’s academic achievement in recent years.
Dr. Farquhar is a member of America National Academy of Engineering. He has worked and published in the space industry since 1958. Holding senior positions at NASA from 1966 to 1990, he served at Ames Research Center, the Electronics Research Center, Goddard Space Flight Center at NASA Headquarters. From 1990 to 2007, he worked at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Having coined the term “halo orbits” in his dissertation at Stanford University, he went to conceive the orbit and the worked with scientists end engineers at the Goddard Space Flight Center to design the spacecraft and the mission of the ISEE-3 Mission and the conceived and worked on the extension for the ISEE-3 Mission into International Cometary Explorer(ICE). Dr. Farquhar’s other projects have included the OPEN/ISTP Program, Halley’s Comet Mission, Discovery Program, the NEAR Shoemaker mission to 433 Eros, the CONTOUR comet mission, the MESSENGER mission to Mercury and New Horizons mission to Pluto/Charon. He also has authored, edited, contributed to or co-authored over 200 publications in various aspects of space science.
