July 30th to August 4th, President WANG Shuguo attended the C9-Go8 (Group of Eight in Australia) University’s Presidents Forum in Australia and visited several Go8 member universities like Australian National University, the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales, the University of Melbourne and Monash University. WANG agreed upon cooperation with Go8 in the basic research in large scientific programs. WANG also signed an agreement on the exchange of students with Monash University.
University’s presidents and vice-chancellors from both countries first listened to the Go8 Secretariat’s report on C9-Go8’s collaboration and then discussed further collaboration. Since the sign of the cooperation agreement between C9 and Go8 in 2010, programs like the exchange of students, the doctoral candidates’ enrollment, the exchange and cooperation of teaching staff and the training of executive level professional staff, have been successfully put into operations and got strong support from both countries’ governments. Topics like talents training for higher education and comparative analysis of elite universities from both countries were also discussed at the forum. University’s presidents and vice-chancellors unanimously agreed to strengthen cooperation by maintaining current cooperation programs. Other than that, in order to further develop higher education of both countries, they agreed to highlight undergraduate students’ exchange and communication, scholars’ various cooperation in scientific research, sharing experiences in higher education.
Australian Senator the Hon Christopher Evans, Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research, attended and spoke at the forum. He spoke highly of C9-Go8’s cooperation, pointing out that the expansion of cooperation in higher education is an important part of Sino-Australian friendly cooperation. He said he would spare no effort to support the cooperation in higher education between both countries.
President WANG visited some campuses, laboratories and students dormitories and listened to the brief introduction to those universities. Both parties also talked about talents training, scientific research, and international cooperation and discussed about further cooperation in these aspects. The Chinese delegation also visited China’s Embassy in Australia, where they were welcomed by Ambassador CHEN Yuming.
