September 11, the opening ceremony of the HIT - UC Berkeley (University of California, Berkeley) Joint Research Center and the Sustainable Urban Development and International Forum of Sustainable Urban-rural Development, was held in the HIT Museum.
Before the opening ceremony, HIT Vice President ZHOU met with Professor Robert Cervero, (Professor City and Regional Planning University of California Berkley – UC Berkley), Stephen M Wheeler (Associate Professor Landscape Architecture Program University of California Davis – UC Davis) and Professor Fionn Stevenson (Professor of Sustainable Design – University of Sheffield) and discussed HIT’s collaborations with UC Berkley, UC Davis and the University of Sheffield.
HIT School of Architecture Vice Dean LENG Hong presided over the opening ceremony. HIT Vice President ZHOU Yu and UC Berkeley Institute of Urban and Regional Development Director Professor Cervero jointly inaugurated the Research Center. Vice President ZHOU introduced HIT’s current situation and achievements. He congratulated the universities on the establishment of the Center and expressed his hope for further collaborations. Robert Cervero, Stephen M Wheeler and Fionn Stevenson said that the founding of the Center would promote research in the area of sustainable urban development by encouraging international collaborations. HIT School of Architecture Dean MEI Hongyuan hoped that the Center would pave the way for scientific and research collaborations between scholars both at home and abroad. The opening ceremony was also attended by leaders from the Personnel Office and the International Office.
The International Forum of Sustainable Urban-rural Development was then held on September 11 and 12. In this forum, scholars from U.S., Britain and China delivered impressive speeches on new developments in urban-rural planning, as well as in the sustainable development of architecture and landscape.
