HIT Team attends World Model United Nations Conference

From March 18 to March 22 a team from HIT participated in the World Model United Nations (MUN) Conference World MUN 2013 Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia including two Faculty Advisors and six student representatives. The faculty advisors were HIT Youth League Secretary LI Jingwei and Head of the Third English Teaching Department, School of Foreign Languages, Professor ZHOU Zhinan. The student representatives were GUAN Ruolin from the School of Astronautics, JIANG Wei and Li Yuming from the School of Management, KAO Qiqiang from the School of Foreign Languages, ZHU Ming from the School of Material Science and Engineering and ZHANG Zhengda from the School of Electrical Engineering and Automation.
 
School of Electrical Engineering and Automation student, ZHANG Zhengda received the Diplomacy Award at the conference. He is only the second person to ever receive the award from China. The first person who received the award from China was Zhang Lingli, from Zhengjiang University in 2012. ZHANG, as a member of Model United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, showed zeal and quick thinking in the discussion of “Systematic Discrimination Against Cultural Minority”. He represented Cambodia, a developing country. He thought that the developing countries should a bloc and focus on establishing the public education system. However, he pointed out that establishing a new education system needs money, so that international funding should be a priority. He wrote a working paper to clarify his ideas. He became the leader of the developing countries’ bloc, and a lot of developed countries wanted to cooperate with them. He held in-depth discussions with other representatives and put forward a solution. He received the Diplomacy Award due to his impressive performance in the meeting.
 
Two thousand young people from eighty countries participated in World MUN 2013. . For the duration of the World MUN conference, students assumed the position of United Nations delegates and represented assigned Member States in committees and forums, debating, discussing and attempting to resolve some of the world’s most pressing and complex problems. Delegates were given the opportunity to articulate their views on international issues, and to develop networks spanning across borders. Their discussions are held in accordance with the prevailing rules and procedures of the United Nations’.
 
HIT sent teams to participate in the World Model United Nations activity in 2011 for the first time. As well as the World MUN conference, HICA holds HIT MUN each year. Around 200 students from various universities participated the last time it was held. The slogan of MUN at HIT is Seize Your Life, Grasp Your Future, Start Your Legend of Diplomacy!
