April 20, the news of the Lushan earthquake and the progress of earthquake relief attracted the attention of the whole nation including the people in HIT. On April 22, following praying for the disaster area, volunteer service and other love activities that were spontaneously organized by the staff and students in HIT and the graduates of HIT who are in Sichuan, the HIT Party Secretary WANG Shuquan, other university leaders and staff came to make donations for the earthquake. Within half an hour, donations of 128,720 yuan had been made.
HIT President WANG Shuguo said in an interview with the media that immediately the university, staff, teachers and students learned the news of the earthquake, they took action. All the departments of the university immediately investigated the situation of teachers’ and students’ that had families who were in Sichuan, and provided financial assistance to the students whose families were seriously affected. Teachers of civil engineering, transportation and psychological education were prepared to volunteer, and go to the disaster area to participate in earthquake relief and post-disaster reconstruction according to the needs of people in the disaster area. Students were praying for people in the disaster area through various activities. They said that they were all ready to participate in the volunteer service of earthquake relief. Finally, President WANG said, “This series of spontaneous actions of HIT teachers and students fully embodies the sense of cohesion and responsibility of HIT people in the face of a catastrophe, and it is the concrete manifestation of the spiritual tradition that HIT always shares the same breath and the same fate as the country and its people. HIT is always ready to obey the call of the country and the people!”
