At 8:02 on April 20th, a magnitude 7 earthquake struck Lushan County in Ya’an City, Sichuan province. The earthquake news drew the attention of the whole country, including all the teachers and students in HIT. That night, some HIT students held a spontaneous "Blessing Ya'an” activity to express concern for their compatriots in Ya'an.
Members of the Learn From LEI Feng Group of the School of Mechatronic Engineering and 2nd year students from class 1108103 gathered in the hallway of Student Dormitory A2, carefully folding one paper crane after another. Monitor HE Wenqiang said: “As college students, we should have a sense of social responsibility and do our best to impart a positive energy to the community. Our nation is like a big family, and the Ya'an people are like our siblings. I want to tell them that no matter what difficulties they are coming across, as long as we stick together, we are able to overcome the disaster.”
The students made the word “Blessing Ya'an” with red strings on the barbed wire fence outside the tennis courts, and attached the folded paper cranes to the characters. A lot of passing students spontaneously participated in the activity. “When I heard the Ya’an earthquake news this morning, I felt very sad. So I thought out such an activity to express HIT’s concern for Ya'an people” said ZHANG Jinfeng, one of the organizers and the secretary of class 1108103. “I hope Ya'an people can be strong enough to weather the storm as soon as possible. Ya'an, cheer up!”
A number of other activities were also held to support Ya'an earthquake relief on the campus.
