HIT delegation attends the G20 Youth Forum

From April 18th to 21st, The G20 Youth Forum was held in St. Petersburg, Russia. A delegation including 5 students and one faculty advisor from HIT attended the meeting. The HIT delegation included doctoral students GUO Yuanzhi, School of Materials Science and Engineering, SUN Fei, School of Energy Science and Engineering, Masters student MA Yilun, School of Foreign Languages and undergraduate students KANG Ziliang, RUAN Lecheng. The faculty advisor was Wang Xiuheng Deputy Director of the HIT International Office. This was the first time HIT students had attended the forum.
 
In 2012, HIT began preparing and building the delegation for the G20 Youth Forum. There were originally over 130 applicants. After two rounds of selection, including a first round of resume submission and a second round interview to test applicants English proficiency and knowledge of world affairs, 5 students were selected.
 
During the Forum around 600 participants from 200 of the best Universities in the world discussed global problems which are on the agenda of the G20 in the format of 20 round tables working in parallel. Each HIT student delegate gave a 15-min keynote speech in a particular round table group and held discussions with international experts, young teachers and students. The HIT students participated in the following round tables: GUO Yuanzhi, Innovations, Technology & Science, SUN Fei, Ecology, Environment, Energy & Food security, MA Yilun, Social Dimension: Culture and Mass Media and KANG Ziliang and RUAN Lecheng, Innovations, Technology & Science. The HIT delegation also participated in the G20 Youth Forum Opening Cocktail Reception, the Grand Imperial Ball “The Silver Angel” and the closing Gala Formal Dinner.
 
The G20 Youth Forum is the largest international event organized for young leaders in 2013. The Forum was established by G8 and G20 Alumni Association in 2006. Over 1500 young leaders, students and academics, representatives of the business world and governments participated in it this year. Apart from HIT, other Chinese universities also participated, including Nankai University, Tianjin University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Renmin University of China and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
