The architectural disciplines require their students to experience and observe in the field practical street planning and building design. Led by the General Party Branch in the School of Architecture, the 2010 Class Party Branch hosted this year’s activity of A Visit to Harbin Old Architectures, which began in 2008 as a part of the Heart Bridge Program aimed at freshmen.

The Dean of the Architecture History Institute WANG Yan gave a vivid and elaborate introduction to freshman Architecture students of the change and formation process of the Harbin urban layout along the Mid East Railway, as well as laneways and origins of the Daowai District fused with Chinese and western characteristics. He described the courtyard layouts, the specific decoration and culture of buildings in Daowai, giving the freshmen a general knowledge of the Baroque complex there. Guided by party members of the Junior 2010 grade, the freshmen paid a field visit to the Baroque complex in the Daowai District, experiencing the Chinese Baroque style. Discussions were held based on the architectural features explained in the lecture.

The activity is highly praised by the freshmen. MENG Yan, one of the students, said that the visit enabled her to gain a specific, direct, objective and clear understanding of old buildings in Harbin when combined with the theoretical guidance provided. Party members of the 2010 grade took pride in addressing the freshmen. LUO Shengtao said, “When we were freshmen, students in the higher grade led us to the visit. Now it’s our turn. As a party member, I feel proud and satisfied.”

The Heart Bridge Program is a program that strives to enable the harmonious journey for students from basic knowledge acquisition to specialized knowledge acquisition through senior party members playing a strong role, as well as through higher grade students sharing experiences with, helping and leading students in the lower grades. In the past it has included activities such as Master’s Lectures, Party Members Stepping into Classroom, Salons with Class Teacher, Sharing Sessions with Outstanding Senior Students and Party Members Stepping into Community.
