Three Microsoft Research Asia Scientists Appointed PhD Supervisors

On May 9th, the School of Computer Science and Technology held a ceremony to appoint as part-time PhD Supervisors Assistant Managing Director ZHAO Feng, Assistant Managing Director MA Weiying and Senior Researcher and HIT alumni WU Feng from Microsoft Research Asia.
 
The appointment ceremony was presided over by Secretary of the Party Committee ZHAO Tiejun in the School of Computer Science and Technology. China Ministry of Education–Microsoft Key Laboratory of Natural Language Processing and Speech Director LI Sheng made a speech. He discussed the construction of a high-quality personnel training base relying on China Ministry of Education–Microsoft Key Laboratory of Natural Language Processing and Speech of HIT, and issued the letters of appointment. PAN Tianyou, Manager of Microsoft Research Asia Academic Cooperation Department in China, made a speech at the ceremony, hoping that both sides will further strengthen coorporation.
 
After the appointment ceremony, Dr. WU made a presentation entitled “Image and Video Coding” for HIT students. He gave a brief overview of more than two decades of developments in mainstream image and video coding and also introduced the hot issue of cloud-based coding.
 
Microsoft Research Asia has been cooperating with HIT to establish a Microsoft - HIT high level personnel training base since 2011, seeking to strengthen bilateral research cooperation, exploring and gradually improving the high-end talent development system. The three new part-time PhD supervisors are all fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and have made contributions in key technology research in wireless network, software analysis, natural language computing and image and video coding. Presently, six senior Microsoft Research Asia researchers are part-time PhD supervisors in HIT. They will jointly promote the Microsoft - HIT high level personnel training base development.
