On July 2nd, academician of HIT, Professor Ching Chuen CHAN, one of the world's most eminent authorities on electric vehicles, received the Prince Philip Medal during the Academy's Awards Dinner in recognition of his role in the development of electric vehicles as we know them today. Princess Anneawarded the medal to him for his contribution to engineering and education.
Professor CHAN has contributed to the development of the field through his academic research with over 300 research papers. As co-founder and president of the World Electric Vehicles Association, he has been devoted to the work of popularization of technology and education in this field. Over his 40-year career, Professor CHAN has published 11 books, including the seminal Modern Electric Vehicle Technology, the first comprehensive book on the subject, which has been widely adopted by both industrialists and academics.
“Electric vehicles have been my bread and butter in the latter half of my life and indeed they are what have made me what I am today. To cope with the challenges of this new era, it is essential to promote a climate of renaissance and open mindedness, truly in the spirit of engineering. The philosophy of engineering is system integration and optimization; the engineering spirit is a 'can-do' spirit.”Professor CHAN said, “It is in that spirit that I accept this prestigious award, not on behalf of myself only, but on behalf of my institutions, teachers, colleagues, friends and students. This is the result of decades of collective work; the honor also belongs to them”.Professor CHANwill continue his research, focusing on the new infrastructure needed to integrate electric vehicles into the world's energy systems, such as smart charging and vehicle-to-grid systems, and the correlation between energy and information.
The Prince Philip Medal is sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineering and was begun 1991in recognition of those who make outstanding contributions and innovation to technology in the field of engineering.
Additionally, in September of 2013, WFEO awarded the Medal of Engineering Excellence to Professor CHAN, for his contributions inthe advancement of theory, practice, and commercialization of electric vehicles and creative engineering education. The Medal of Engineering Excellence began in 1989, and isawarded once every two years, in order to attract worldwide attention in engineering practice, theory and contributions to society. Those who win the honor are excellent engineers who have made outstanding achievements in aspects of practice and theory.
