On July 18th, HIT’s 2014 doctoral degree-granting ceremony was held in the Student Activities Center.Vice President of theHIT Academic Degrees CommitteeandVice President DING Xuemei presided over the ceremony. President ZHOU Yu, leadstaff of related schools, doctoral supervisors and graduates’ relatives attended the ceremony. Vice President DINGread the Harbin Institute of Technology AcademicDegrees Committee decision on Doctoral degrees-granting.According to the 150th meeting of the Academic DegreeCommittee, 272 studentsobtainedtheirdoctorate degrees, 30 in Science, 232 in engineering, and 10 in management.

President ZHOU delivered amessage to the graduates.He said: "To obtaina doctoral degree is a long and difficult process. Each student is drivento a test of wills and perseverance.Through the process of studying, you not only gain solid and extensive knowledge andthe strong ability of independent research, but mostimportantlyyou learninnovative thinking and ways of doing things. You learn perseverance."He put forward some expectations to Ph.D. graduates: In future work and life, graduates should always insist on beinga good person, having right values, responsibilityand perseverance.Graduates shouldcontinue to persist inthe spirit they maintained during their study, adheringto a strong work ethic, and not playing petty tricksin work and lifebut pursuingreal wisdom. Graduates should have the courage to blaze new trails, makethe first breakthrough, and be brave to assume leading responsibility for Chinese economic growth in science and technology.Graduates should maintain perseverance. Thegreater groundbreaking the discovery is,the more difficultiespeople encounter. Only people who are perseverant and never give up can succeed. Graduates should be healthy and happy, witha colorful life and warm family. President ZHOU deliveredhis affectionate message to the graduates:"I hopethat you can soar to great heights and have bright prospects. Ihopethat health, happiness, sweetness and love, family, friendship, love of your alma mater, mentors and the friendship of your schoolmates can be with you forever."

Graduate representative, School of Chemical Engineeringand Technology student ZHU Qing thanked HIT and teachers’ cultivation as well as the help offamily and friendsin her speech.She said that,as anHIT alumnistudentsshould stick to their inner feelings, believe in themselves, pursue their dreams, be steadfast in work and be diligent in life to fulfill their social responsibilities.

Internationalgraduate students’representative,School of Materials Science and Engineeringstudent KA Wei expressed his sincere blessing to HIT in his speech: "Thanks to our alma mater, HIT, thanks to the teachers and students. HIT, we love you."

Graduates family representative, WANG Li, thanked HIT in her speech. It is HIT’s rigorous academic atmosphere and excellent learning conditions that allowsgraduates toachieve. She expressed wishesthat graduates can uphold the HIT spirit, explore the future and maintain the honor and pride of teachers, friendsand relatives, of HIT, and ofour motherland.

Doctoral supervisor representative, School of Electronics and Information Engineering Professor ZHANG Ye,expressed his heartfeltblessing to the graduates in his speech. He expressed his hopethat graduates can keep in mind the school motto: “Being strict in qualifications for graduates; making every endeavor in educating students.”Graduates can make progress, achieve better results, and take the social responsibility to contribute to the world-class university construction of HIT and the great rejuvenation of China.

Executive Vice President of the Graduate School ZHEN Liang hosted the degree-awarding portion of the ceremony. 272 graduates were granted their doctoral degrees by President ZHOU and took photos with him.
