China-Canada Joint Workshop held at HIT

From July 19th to 20th, the 2014 China-Canada Joint Workshop on Building Dual PhD Degree Programs, jointly sponsored by HIT and the University of Alberta, was held in Room 214 of the HIT Activity Center. Ninety experts and scholars from 38 universities in China and Canada met in Harbin and discussed PhD cultivation and dual PhD degree programs in the context of globalization. HIT President ZHOU Yu attended the workshop and gave a speech.
 
In the speech, President ZHOU said that in its ninety-year history, HIT has had a strong advantage in scientific research and postgraduate education, and has attached great importance to international exchanges and established cooperative relations with more than 300 universities in more than 40 countries. Chinese and Canadian universities have carried out close international exchanges and cooperation and accumulated rich experience in PhD cultivation and dual PhD degree programs. President ZHOU hoped that through the workshop, both sides would be able to strengthen exchanges and cooperation, develop a new PhD cultivation mode, and enhance the level of the dual PhD degree programs.
 
HIT Vice President DING Xuemei presided over the workshop. Carl G. Amrhein, Vice President of the University of Alberta, CAO Shihai, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Scholarship Council and Julia Basse, the representative of the Embassy of Canada to China respectively gave speeches at the opening ceremony. Matthias Kuder, Head of the Liaison Office Network, Center for International Cooperation, Freie Universität Berlin made a report at the opening ceremony to comprehensively introduce the developmental history and influence of the international dual PhD degree.
 
At the workshop, participants discussed policies and systems for PhD cultivation, the cooperative research and joint guidance of Chinese and Canadian supervisors and thesis standards for the dual PhD degree, and then held a full discussion on relevant issues. Six representatives of Chinese and Canadian universities commented on the workshop.   
 
Additionally, at the workshop, Chinese and Canadian university representatives reached an agreement in dual PhD degree programs after a discussion and further promoted the mutual development in PhD cultivation and dual PhD degree programs.
 
At the closing ceremony, Vice President Amrhein and HIT Assistant President XU Dianguo gave speeches.
 
During the workshop, publicity lectures on Canadian postgraduate programs and an exhibition of Canadian universities was held at HIT and attracted many students.
 
Administrators from the China Scholarship Council, the Department of Postgraduate Education (Office of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee), Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, the HIT Graduate School and the HIT International Cooperation Department also attended the workshop.
