On August 14, the 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) wasreleased by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. ARWU has been presenting the world’s Top 500 Universities annually based on transparent methodology and reliable data. A total of 32 mainland Chinese universities are on the list, an increase of four from last year. Six Chinese universities, including Tsinghua University and Peking University,are ranked inthe World’s Top 200.
ARWU began in 2003. Harvard University remains the number one university in the world for the 12th year running. Other Top 10 universities are: Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, Cambridge, Princeton, Caltech, Columbia, Chicago and Oxford. ETH Zurich (19th) tookfirst place in Continental Europe, followed by Pierre & Marie Curie (35th).The University of Copenhagen (39th) overtook Paris-Sud (42nd) in France as the third best university in Continental Europe. The University of Tokyo (21st) and Kyoto University (26th) topped other universities in Asia. The University of Melbourne (44th) became the highest ranked university in this region in the history of the ARWU.
A total of 32 mainland Chinese universities are on the list of the world’s Top 500 universities, which increased four compared with last year. Among them, six universities are in the World Top 200: Tsinghua, Peking, Shanghai Jiao Tong, Zhejiang, Fudan and the University of Science and Technology of China. Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University rankedamong the World's Top 150; Sun Yat-Sen University, Xi'an Jiao Tong University, Nanjing University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Beijing Normal University ranked between 201 to 300. Jilin University, Southeast University and the other 13 universities ranked between 301 to 400. Among these 13 universities, East China University of Science and Technology, Soochow University, Nanjing Medical University, and Capital Medical University were, for the first time, ranked in the world's top 500.
The Center for World-Class Universities also released the 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities by Broad Subject Fields (ARWU-FIELD) and 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities by Subject Fields (ARWU-SUBJECT).
In the Broad Subject Fields, among Academic Ranking of World Universities in Natural Sciences and Mathematics Science, Peking University ranked 50th in the world, while China University of Science and Technology and Tsinghua University entered the World Top 100.In Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences, Tsinghua University ranked 20th, HIT and another 11 universities entered the World Top 100. In Life and Agriculture Sciences, Zhejiang University and China Agricultural University ranked among 101 to 150; in Social Science, Peking University ranked among 151 to 200 .
In Subject Fields: in Mathematics, Peking University ranked 37th in the world; in Physics, China University of Science and Technology and Peking University entered the World’s Top 100; in Chemistry, Peking University ranked 28th in the world; in Computer Science, Tsinghua University ranked 27th in the world.
2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities
