HIT holds 2014 Graduate Student Opening Ceremony

On September 5th, HIT’s 2014 Graduate Student Opening Ceremony was held at the stadium. 4558 graduate students, 786 doctoral students and 224 foreign graduate students from 54 countries officially became HITers. Vice President DING Xuemei presided over the ceremony. Discipline Inspection Commission Secretary CAI Jujin, President ZHOU Yu, Vice Presidents GUO Bin, AN Shi, and XU Dianguo, as well as representatives of university schools, tutors and graduate associate membersattended the ceremony. President ZHOU Yu offered an affectionate message to students.Vice President GUO Bin read the Harbin Institute of Technology decision on rewarding 2014 outstanding recommended exemptiongraduate students.Special scholarships were awarded to 423 outstanding recommended graduatestudentsand they were awarded honorary certificates by school officials.
 
President ZHOU Yu said in his speech that as a graduate student, they should further clarify the purpose of learning and the development goals. At the graduate level, students should try to be a better person, increasing in knowledge and personal ability to contribute to the development of society. Students should improve their values, their inner character, including theirreading, practice and thinking. These factorsmay decide the height of a person’slife. Students should read more good books and fully absorb the essence of traditional Chinese culture and the world's outstanding cultures to achieve comprehensive development.What’s more, studentsshould strive to improve their innovative ability, their courage to question and explore, and to think more. They should gradually learn to use thisability to create new things. President ZHOU also said that HIT cannot develop without students’ endeavors. They are the masters of HIT. He expressed hope that students can actively give their suggestions forHIT’s development and contribute their wisdom to build HITinto a world class university.
 
School of Architecture graduate student XIE Yuanwenand School of Humanities and Social Science graduate student Dasa, as the representatives of Chinese students and foreign students, respectively, delivered their speeches.Standing at a new point inlife, they showed their determinationto uphold HIT’s spirit, to improve themselves, to practice, and to contribute toHIT and society.
 
School of Energy Science and Engineering Professor YU Daren shared his sentiments about studying and teaching at HIT in hisspeech. He suggested students make challenging and feasible life plans early on. Studentsshould implement their plan, and achieve their goals instages. Their great dreams arelike seeds which willgrow, blossom and attainfruitatHIT.
 
Deans and Party Secretaries of university schools expressed their expectations according to the disciplines’ features and gave their blessing to the 2014 graduate students. All graduate students swore solemnly:“I will try to practice the HIT spirit, always keeping in mind the school motto. I will study and work hard for social development, national revitalization, and human progress.”
