On January 7th, HIT’s doctoral degree-granting ceremony was held at the HIT Museum. Lead staff of related schools, doctoral supervisors and graduates’ relatives attended the ceremony. Vice President DING Xuemei read the Harbin Institute of Technology Academic Degrees Committee Decision on Doctoral Degrees-Granting. According to the 152nd meeting of the Academic Degree Committee, 144 students obtained their doctorate degrees, 13 in science, 122 in engineering, and 9 in management. Executive Vice President of the Graduate School, ZHEN Liang, hosted the degree-awarding portion of the ceremony. Lead staff of related schools and doctoral supervisors awarded graduates their diplomas. While there was white snow blanketing the ground outside, inside, the atmosphere was warm and full of spring and the students were full of energy. President ZHOU Yu granted the 144 graduates their doctoral degrees, delivered a message to them, and took photos with them.

Present ZHOU put forward some expectations to the Ph.D. graduates: firstly, graduates should become people who practice HIT’s motto. They should be strict with themselves to a high standard in order to achieve excellence. Secondly, graduates should become people who are on a mission to attain China’s rejuvenation. They should be dream-chasers of this great rejuvenation. Thirdly, graduates should become people who explore the unknown world. They should have courage, perseverance and a spirit of dedication to science. They should insist on lifelong study and make a contribution to human development. Fourthly, graduates should become people who lead the industry. They should constantly improve themselves and contribute to our country’s development. Fifthly, graduates should be people who realize their value. They should be tolerant of diversity, and learn to hold mutual understanding. They should be helpful and compassionate and can realize their value by helping others. At last, ZHOU said, “My dear students, you all are granted doctoral degrees and have gained fame and respect. However, you should realize that to be a doctor means standard and responsibility. You should live up to your identity. I hope that you can bear in mind your mission, explore your life and improve yourself to achieve success!”

Graduate representative, School of Civil Engineering student LI Yugang, expressed his thanks and good wishes to HIT, supervisors, family members, friends and schoolmates. He also shared encouragement with all the graduates, “Let us all strive for our future to extend our youth with the knowledge, culture, talent and spirit, to which we owe HIT.”

Graduates relatives representative, SUN Defu, said, “The doctoral degree-granting ceremony represents an end of one period of the study life, and also marks a new start of life. I believe that every one of you will have an extraordinary future.” He expressed hope that graduates can be grateful to HIT. They should take HIT as their spiritual home and contribute to their alma mater’s glory as their return of thanks.

“My dear students, the HIT spirit ‘Being strict in qualifications for graduates. Making every endeavor in educating students,’ is in your mind. I hope you can inherit HIT’s tradition and spirit to achieve your success,” Doctoral supervisor representative, Chair professor invited by the “Chang Jiang Scholar Award Program,” YANG Chunhui, said. He put forward some expectations to the graduates, and said, “Cease to innovate and you cease to live; strengthen convictions and be down to earth; be severe with yourself and lenient towards others.”
