On March 5, the opening ceremony for the 2015 Ph.D. students was held at the HIT museum. Together, 196 newly enrolled doctoral students, embarked on a new academic journey. HIT President ZHOU Yu attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.
In his speech, ZHOU put forward several expectations for the students. First, he encouraged students to fully understand the characteristics of the doctoral phase of learning, in order to be fully prepared to meet the challenges. Also, he exhorted them to think creatively, develop potential, and carefully plan their study and life, as they strive to achieve harvest. Second, he put forth that in accordance with the requirements of building a world-class university, students must be strict with themselves and pursue the best in themselves, as they profoundly understand and practice the HIT motto. Third, ZHOU encouraged students to be devoted to innovation and exploration in the field of science, and to play a leading role in our innovation-oriented society. His fourth point was, to keep working hard to overcome difficulties with perseverance and determination. Fifth, students should foster a rigorous scientific spirit and strictly abide by academic ethics. Sixth, he exhorted students to require oneself to uphold virtuous standards to be well-rounded students. Seventh, he reminded students to keep both mind and body healthy with an optimistic attitude, and to develop a good habit of regular exercise. Finally, he expressed hope that students could achieve impressive success in this golden period of life.

NIU Hao, Ph.D. student representative in the School of Electrical Engineering and Automation, said in his speech, "we must not only complete our own learning and research tasks, but also inherit HIT spirit-‘Being strict in qualifications for graduates; making every endeavor in educating students.’ Meanwhile, we need to improve our comprehensive abilities with a devoted heart to the world and our motherland."
Professor TAN Yiqiu, doctoral supervisor representative in the School of Transportation Science and Technology, proposed some expectations for students. She suggested students develop an interest in scientific research and maintain an attitude towards learning with clear goals. In addition, she said students must overcome difficulties with perseverance and determination, make full use of the available knowledge base, and establish a harmonious relationship with their teachers.
After the ceremony, Deputy Dean of the Graduate School, GAO Dong, gave a presentation entitled, "Basic Information about HIT Postgraduate Education and an Introduction on Doctoral Training Reform Measures.”
Assistant President and Executive Deputy Dean of the Graduate School, ZHEN Liang, and leaders from other
schools participated in the ceremony.
