Recently, after 3 months diligence, the third “Intellectual Property Cup” of Heilongjiang University Innovation Contest was finished. Associate Professor Xue Binxia and instructor Li Tongyu won the first prize for teachers with a work of attached vertical duct system aiming to improve the urban street canyon micro climate and air quality.

From the trans-disciplinary point of view, the system aimed to solve the current PM2.5 air pollution problem, which is the result of rapid urbanization in China. It was based on the stack effect. It concentrated on the special environment under the conditions of the urban street canyon where the motor vehicle exhaust and air pollutants cannot dissipate quick enough because of the urban spatial structure, building height and density, low wind strength, temperature inversion and other special meteorological conditions. The invention could be widely used for urban streets and residential areas. It is low cost and easily-maintained, which has great significance on reducing urban air pollution hazards and improving the living environment quality.

The contest began in June, 2015. It is held by Heilongjiang Intellectual Property Office, Science and Technology Department of Heilongjiang province, Education Department of Heilongjiang Province and Heilongjiang Association for Science and Technology and has solicited 516 valid entries. Teachers and students of 34 universities from Heilongjiang participated in the contest.
