The planned night scene of the main ice-tower

The 17th Harbin Ice and Snow World shows the theme of the time: Ice and Snow, Prosperous Heilongjiang. It is under the settings of One Belt One Road and the Silk Road of Heilongjiang province; based on the Huaxia Culture, Silk Road Culture, European-styled Culture, Heilongjiang Culture and Harbin Culture; and expressed by the art, architecture, sport and shows of ice and snow.

This year, the Harbin Ice and Snow World invited the HIT Architectural Design and Research Institute and a Dutch design institute for the whole design. The crew includes 5 planning majors, 10 architectural majors, 8 landscape majors, 10 electrical engineering majors and 5 structural majors. The design took 3 months and dozens of on-site investigations with geographical information analysis technology, ecological simulation software and 3D model technology. The layout was transformed several times and the final layout features in the ice and snow entertainment and the art of ice engraving. It is the largest ice and snow pageant in the world.

The 17th Harbin Ice and Snow World elaborates the theme of the ancient Silk Road and the modern maritime Silk Road, and the stories are linked by various ice engravings. The ingenious design of the main ice-tower fully demonstrates the balance of the solidity and flexibility along with the Silk Road Culture and the ice and snow culture with the concept of Silk Road, the inspiration of the rotation of silk axis and the technique of non-linearity parameterization. The complicated and exquisite main ice-tower also overcomes the difficulties of ice architecture with interior and exterior steel structures and advanced 3D curves design which shows different angles and sizes of different surfaces. For light effect, they applied a highly difficult plan of combining various light sources. The main ice-tower is the largest main tower so far, and the core architecture of the 17th Harbin Ice and Snow World. It is the combination of the ice and snow art and the architectural technique, creating a landmark for the ice and snow landscape.

This year, the crew innovatively applied the design of light rhythms. Plentiful layers of light and light integration and continuity are created by rhythms like the starry sky, flowing water, breathing patterns and heartbeats, in a variety of colors. Meanwhile, the application of LED and the effect of the light and shadow will be a visual feast for visitors.

This Ice and Snow World considers visitor’s viewing perspective. The layout of the landscapes is sensible with integration of ice and snow, technology and culture. It is based on the ice and snow culture, centered on technology and art, relies on Silk Road Culture, bonds various customs and shows unique style in Harbin. The design of landscapes, light effect and visiting route are improved significantly. The 17th Harbin Ice and Snow World contributes greatly to the ice and snow tourism of Heilongjiang province.
