HIT Students Won the Tenth National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award and the Title of 2015 Annual “Xiaoping Science and Technology Innovation Team”

On August 22, in honor of Comrade Deng Xiaoping’s 112th anniversary, the ceremony of the Tenth China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award was held in the Great Hall of the People. Wei Mingchuan, a doctorate student from School of Astronautics of HIT won the 10th National Adolescence Science and Technology Innovation Award, and the lilac satellite team won the title of 2015 Annual “Xiaoping Science and Technology Innovation Team”. Zhou Bin, a professor in the School of Astronautics and holder of the Fifth Adolescence Science and Technology Innovation Award, delivered a speech as the representative of previous winners. Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of the State Council and a member of the Communist Party's Politburo, as well as Liu Yuanchao, Vice President and a member of the Communist Party's Politburo attended the ceremony and presented the award. Comrade Liu Yandong spoke highly of Professor Zhou Bin for his scientific and technological achievements as well as his struggle for several times in the speech.

Comrade Liu Yandong also pointed out in his speech that China is marching on a great historical journey to become a sci-tech power. As the vital force of scientific and technological innovation, young people not only face great prospects but also shoulder the glorious mission. She encouraged the young to seize the opportunity, cherish every second, maintain a keen interest in exploration, promote pragmatic scientific spirit, lay a solid foundation of knowledge for creation and innovation, hone their indomitable will, seek inspiration from life, enhance their talents and ability in practice and deliver wonderful life by serving the society and benefiting the people through scientific and technological innovation. Liu Yandong stressed that governments at all levels should implement the spirit of the National Science and Technology Innovation Conference, attach great importance to youth’ scientific and technological innovation, full implement quality education, upgrade the service level and openness of technological infrastructure, thus creating a good environment for adolescents’ scientific and technological innovation. Governments also should support and encourage them to set lofty aspirations, build dreams in science, take part in the practice of innovation and make active contribution to the building of sci-tech power and realization of “Two Centenary Goals”.

Wei Mingchuan, a doctorate student who was admitted to the School of Astronautics in 2015, is in charge of HIT Lilac Satellite Team and leads the students to have developed “Lilac Satellite II”, China’s first nano-satellite independently developed and regulated by students. The satellite was successfully launched in September 2015 at the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, and now still operates well in the orbit, far exceeding the designed lifespan of three months. Currently, the “Lilac Satellite I” nano-satellite, developed independently by student teams, is in test, and will soon be launched.

Zhou Bin is a professor and doctoral supervisor in our School of Astronautics, who won the Fifth National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award in 2008 during his doctoral education. He recalled in his discourse the experience of overcoming financial difficulties and persistently climbing the heights of science. He also encouraged young students to set lofty ideals while studying and doing scientific research, meet the country’s major needs, persist in a down-to-earth way, and be bold to have, pursue and realize dreams during the creation and innovation.

Wei Mingchuan is the eighth student to win this award, followed by Zhang Xingwen from School of Municipal and Environmental Engineering, Wang Jiannan from School of Computer Science and Technology, Zhou Bin from School of Astronautics, Wang Wenshou from School of Materials Science and Engineering, Liu Yuan from School of Science, Wang Long from School of Materials Science and Engineering, and Leng Xiaokun from Computer Science and Technology.

The National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award was founded at Comrade Deng Xiaoping’s 100th birth anniversary in 2004 according to his last wish with his total copyright royalties of one million yuan in order to encourage adolescents’ innovation in science and technology. Its fund was set up by Central Communist Youth League, All-China Youth Federation, All-China Students' Federation and National Working Committee of Chinese Young Pioneers and available for 100 full-time individual students mainly from universities and colleges, middle schools and primary schools every year.
