Each school (department):
In order to deepen the reform of education and teaching and to promote the academic research of teaching, the teaching level and ability of teachers and the quality of education and teaching, HIT Center for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning will be free for teachers to carry out "Midterm Students Feedback" instructional consultation. Specific matters are notified as follows:
First, the introduction of Midterm Students Feedback
"Midterm Students Feedback" (hereinafter referred to as MSF) originates in the University of Michigan, which is a common instructional consultant in foreign universities. As a "evaluation and diagnosis" of teaching, MSF is usually carried out in the beginning or middle of courses. With the participation of teaching activities, observation, collection, summary and analysis of the multi-dimensional performance and information of teachers and students, the consultant can help teachers to reflect on their teaching performance and seek to the improvement of teaching strategies and measurements. MSF is voluntarily submitted by the teacher; what’s more, the observation records and students’ feedback are only accessible for teachers themselves and will not influence their teaching evaluation and performance.
Second, the specific implementation process of MSF
MSF includes four steps: initial contact, data collection, face-to-face interview and teacher-student communication. During the initial contact, teachers and consultants can communicate with each other by telephone, e-mail or face to face, so that the consultant will preliminary understand the teacher's teaching objectives, student type, syllabus, homework and other basic course information. During the data collection, the consultant participates in the agreed classroom observation, and records the teaching environment, teaching process, teacher-student interaction and other information from four dimensions——the learning of students, teaching of teachers, characteristics of the course and culture of classroom, encourages students to discuss the main advantages and disadvantages of the curriculum and teacher as well as sorts out and summaries the opinions by hands-up or other ways. Subsequently, the consultant will submit the observation records and student feedback to the teacher in written form and interviews him, exchanges views on the advantages and disadvantages of his/her teaching and provides professional advice. The teacher expresses his/her gratitude to students in the next class and presents his/her opinions and measures to improve his/her teaching performance. Practice indicates that MSF can effectively promote mutual trust and communication between teachers and students and improve teaching performance and effectiveness.
Third, the expert team of MSF
As one of the 30 national demonstration center, HIT Center for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning always treats creating a academic atmosphere which attaches great importance to teaching and improving the teaching level and teaching ability as its core function. At present, the Center has set up a team of teaching consultants with reasonable knowledge structure, rich teaching experience, outstanding teaching performance, great teaching research and communication ability and passion for the development of teaching (see the experts in the following link: http://cetl.hit.edu.cn/cb/ba/c8331a183226/page.htm) to serve HIT teachers and students.
