On October 19th, 2017 Professor John Edward Hopcroft, the A.M. Turing Award winner, academician from the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering (USA) and professor from the Department of Computer Science of Cornell University was appointed as an honorary professor at HIT. HIT president Zhou Yu awarded Professor Hopcroft the letter of appointment.
President Zhou Yu extended his warm welcome to Professor Hopcroft as an honorary member of HIT. His hope is that Professor Hopcroft will continue his personal influence on the world stage in the fields of computers, artificial intelligence, big data and other research. This would be a catalyst for scientific research and innovation, personnel training, faculty team building, international cooperation and exchanges in related disciplines in achieving even more outstanding results.
Professor Hopcroft spoke highly of the long history and achievements of HIT. He expressed his gratitude for the great honor of becoming an honorary professor of HIT. His desire is to contribute in the development and construction of HIT in the future.
Professor Hopcroft has taught at Princeton University, Cornell University, Stanford University and other famous institutions. In 1986, Professor Hopcroft was awarded the A.M. Turing Award for his fundamental achievements in algorithmic and data structure design and analysis. In 2011, at the invitation of the State Administration Foreign Experts Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Professor Hopcroft came to China to start working on the construction of computer science and the training of talents in Chinese colleges and universities. In 2016, Professor Hopcroft won the "Chinese Government Friendship Award."
Representatives from the Department of International Cooperation and the School of Computer Science and Technology attended the ceremony.
