In order to implement the important speech made by Secretary-General Xi Jinping at the national ideological and political work conference, Harbin Institute of Technology held a pre-job training for newly recruited faculty and staff October 14th to 16th, 2017. Additional priorities for the training included:
• Strengthening the ideological and political leadership of teachers.
• Assisting in the development of moral and professional ethics of teachers.
• Assimilate the newly recruited members of HIT’s family into the process of “Chinese characteristics, world-class and strictness of HIT”.
• Focus on national higher education major principles and policies.
• Introduce HIT’s tradition and culture as well as the reform and development plans of HIT.
• Teacher development and security in addition to service management work.
Principal Zhou Yu gave a report for the training classes. He combined his own growth experience with the status quo and trends of higher education development at home and abroad. He shared his experience and sentiment as a teacher from 11 aspects, and put forward expectations and requirements for the new faculty members. First, the uniqueness of the profession of teacher. Teachers enjoy the characteristics of professional honor and sanctity, freedom of academic choice, elasticity of working time, and the arduousness of the industry. To be a teacher requires more than just cannot skills. One must possess virtue, and the ability to teach with conscience, heart and soul.
Second, to be a good teacher, one must have ideals and beliefs and be able to instruct others to act by serving as an example to all. To raise up others one has to first rise up himself, and practice General Secretary Xi Jinping’s “four virtues” for teachers, namely “ideals and beliefs, moral sentiments, solid knowledge, and a heart with love”.
Third, teachers must adhere to their first priority, the fundamental task and duty of moral education. Dealing with the relationship between teaching and scientific research, teachers should consciously reach for the standards of “teacher’s morality, teaching qualities, ability of scientific research and teaching levels”. In addition, teachers should teach by personal example, as well as verbal instructions and guide students to grow to their full potential. By teaching with words and deeds teachers propagate the doctrine, impart professional knowledge, and resolve doubts.
Fourth, those new to the HIT family must inherit the tradition of HIT, promote the spirit of HIT, and practice the mottos of HIT. We should all seriously study the history of HIT and agree with its practices. They must integrate into the HIT culture, adhering to the specifications of HIT and inheriting the hard work of HIT. It is important they believe in the history, tradition, the advantages and spiritual culture of HIT.
Fifth, they should adapt to the school’s personnel system reform and the new mechanism quickly with good planning to complete their own tasks. Sixth, they should have the mind and a vision to be a “great teacher” with an open mind, a love for our country and concern for the progress of mankind. They should understand national trends, world trends and the general trend of higher education at home and abroad. Their goal should be to be leaders in the international arena, rooted in the land of China with courage to be explorers in the forefront of international science and technology.
Seventh, they should inherit the pursuit of excellence, exploration and innovation, a hallmark of “HITers”. Our teachers should dare to struggle, be willing to “pay the price”, enduring hardship like a fine horse dashing without a horsewhip. They should be keen on innovation and strive to be the best in their heartfelt pursuit of learning.
Eighth, they should inherit HIT’s fine tradition of “all rivers running into the sea.” They should carry forward the spirit of "eight hundred warriors." They must join together with the older generation from all corners of China, doing their part rooted in the history of HIT.
Ninth, they must pay attention to the development and construction of their school. Their duty is integrating their personal development with school and national development. They have the opportunity to develop positive suggestions for the school and make contributions to HIT with consciously written papers.
Tenth, they should cherish and inherit the school’s style, both in study and teaching. They are to carry forward the school motto of “Stringent Standards and Professional Proficiency” to create excellent results with rigorous scholarship and teaching.
Finally, they should learn to avoid weaknesses and look for the strengths of others. Avoid shortcomings working in unity, cooperation and group wisdom. They are to promote cooperation and collaborative research at HIT by focusing on the strengths of others, understanding their shortcomings, working together with mutual tolerance and help.
Mr. Xiong Sihao, the deputy party secretary of the party committee explained the speech from the national ideological and political work conference; Mr. Wu Songquan, the standing committee member of the school's party committee, minister of information and minister of teacher-work department of HIT elaborated on the Chinese dream. Professor Xu Fengzhen interpreted the series of speeches given by Secretary-General Xi Jinping. The relevant persons in charge of the Personnel Department, Academic Confidentiality Department, Undergraduate Education School and Institute of Science and Industry conducted training in respect to reforms within the personnel system, training for young talents, confidentiality guidelines, “double-world class” construction, undergraduate teaching and education reform and research work.
