On September 22, alumni from both home and abroad gathered for their sixth reunion. The occasion was held in the HIT activity center. Zhou Yu, president of HIT and the alumni association delivered a speech. More than 100 representatives of the association from both home and other countries such as the United States, Canada, France, Australia and Japan were in attendance!
In the speech, Zhou Yu , on behalf of HIT, extended a warm welcome to the alumni returning to HIT from across the globe. He gave advice and suggestions for HIT as well as expressed sincere thanks to those who have long been paying attention to and supporting HIT in its development. Zhou Yu introduced several of the school’s achievements in recent years and shared his experience of forging ahead together with HIT and the alumni. He said that HIT had three treasures, namely the school spirit, the school motto and the alumni. The first treasure was the school spirit. HIT has excellent tradition and spirit. Teachers who have dedicated themselves to the of cause of education and the cultivation of students explained the tradition and spirit of HIT. Students committed to ambition and hard-work fulfilled the standards and excellence of HIT. The second treasure is the school motto. The spirit of the motto is the development of tradition as well as the perseverance of generations of HITers to the core values, education objectives and theories. Strict standards mean high criteria, strict requirements, high and strict standards. In addition, professional proficiency means pursuing excellence and doing everything to the best of student’s abilities. The third treasure are the alumni, also of great importance. For our university, the glorious and painstaking mission is to cultivate talent. The highest award comes when these excellent talents cultivated for the country make contributions for the improvement of our society. The performance of the alumni from all walks of life is the best card that presenting the quality of HIT’s training. Almost three hundred thousand alumni in different fields contribute to development of our society and human progress, showing the responsibility and commitment of HITers. It is the hard-work of HITers, together with the full support and assistance of the alumni which has propelled HIT forward to its present position.
Zhou Yu said that now the Party Central Committee was fully carrying out the innovation driven development strategy and pushing forward the “Double First-rate Development”. HIT’s characteristics of school management and the discipline advantages formed in its nearly one hundred years’ process fit closely with the series of significant strategies being carried out by the nation now. This was providing new historical opportunities for the rapid development of HIT. The development of HIT in the future would require the integration of the wisdom and power of generations of HITers, the unification of all staff, students and alumni as well as the hard-work of each HITer to enhance the confidence and develop the spirit and raise the influence of HIT, thus creating brilliance and sharing achievements together. Schoolmates were the source of strength of continuous development. He shared his hope that the alumni could continue to pay attention to and support the development of the school while advancing in their own careers. In addition, they could be the practitioners of HIT’s standards as well as the inheritors of HIT’s proficiency in their work and living. This would present the spirit of HITers to the society and would contribute to the achievement of the one hundred-year goal of making HIT a world-class university with Chinese characteristics as well as the unique HIT ones.
Zhou Yu presented his hope through 3 tips.. First, we shall show respect to HIT’s historical traditions and continue to develop HIT’s culture. The basic task for universities was personnel training and cultivating first-class talents, and producing cutting-edge achievements was an important symbol of world-class universities. The essence of education was to mold and moisten people’s hearts. Universities shall not only produce material achievements, but also the spiritual ones. Nearly one-hundred year of history has created profound and unique cultural essence for HIT. In doing so, HIT has left precious and profound marks on the history of Chinese higher education.. We shall try our best to explore the culture and historical data from different periods, find out the material carrier of history, discuss our one-hundred year history, condense the spiritual culture of HIT, explore the role of the school motto in education as well as the essence, ways, measures and methods of “educating by alumni”. Our goal is having more alumni return to HIT to communicate with students in campus. In doing so, they will help students appreciate HIT’s historical traditions and one-hundred years of HIT spirit. Second, we shall play the role as a bridge and build up a platform for HIT together. The alumni and their alma mater were interconnected and would support each other forever. The alumni relationship was life-long one. He shared his hope that alumni would play a role as a bridge, establishing long-term cooperation and interaction among themselves, between alumni and HIT as well as among HIT and the society. Cooperation between alumni and the university would provide additional opportunities for students in campus to participate in internships, to find employment and assist them in starting their own business by seizing the opportunities and meeting challenges to create and share achievements together. Third, we shall make HIT a world-class university in the coming one hundred years and push forward the development of HIT together. Making HIT a world-class university was the common expectation of all the HITers. This is a glorious mission that cannot be delayed. HIT shall commit to the way of management with the characteristic of paying attention to studies and focusing on excellent disciplines. In addition, as we become a world-class university, we shall enhance the confidence of all HITers. We will emphasize our historical traditions, advantages and characteristics as well as the cultural spirit of HIT. We would focus on the overall goal to make HIT an elite engineering university as well as a famous one in the field of astronautics. We would lead the way in making HIT a world-class university with Chinese characteristics and HIT standards. Finally, Zhou Yu said that when we united together, we were like the fire that burst into a blaze; and separately, we were like the stars that could form a network. He hoped that the alumni would pay attention to, care and support the development of HIT. Joining together with the faculty and staff of HIT, we would forge ahead bravely with HIT’s founding values and goals. Together we would welcome the centenial of HIT.
Ren Nanqi, vice president of HIT and the alumni association delivered a work report entitled “persisting in standards, training proficiency and pursuing excellence on the basis of service, striving to build up an alumni association fit for a world-class university.” Yang Shiqin, former president and honorary president of the alumni association told the story about HITers facing challenges bravely and forging ahead with joint efforts. He elaborated on the profound essence of HIT’s tradition and spirit. Sun Heyi, vice president of the alumni association hosted the meeting. Vice presidents of the alumni association Jing Rui, Cui Guolan and Xiong Yan attended the meeting. Representatives of the alumni associations from Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, the civil engineering alumni association in Shen Zhen, and the alumni association from Washington, U.S.A. exchanged their experiences in the meeting.
The alumni from both at home and abroad exchanged ideas in groups, discussing how to better carry out the alumni work. They shared freely and expressed their gratefulness to HIT. In addition they shared the construction experience of the alumni association in different locations, and proposed suggestions for the alumni work and centenial celebrations.
