The finals of the “Aerospace Science Cup” College Students’ Scientific and Technological Competition were recently completed. “The Mixing Needle Inclined Penetrating FSW New Method—World-leading Welding Method which is Suitable for the Manufacture of Large Structures such as Carrier Rocket” designed by Hu Yanying, a doctoral graduate student from the School of Materials of HIT under the supervision of Professor Liu Huijie won the first prize with the highest total scores. In addition, the representative teams of HIT won two second prizes and two third prizes.
The competition, sponsored by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, attracted more than 300 teams from 10 colleges and universities with 31 teams entering the finals. The new method of mixing needle inclined penetrating friction stir welding breaks through the application bottleneck of friction stir welding, which can eliminate the defect of kissing bond in the root of the weld and support an effective technique for the reliable connectivity of large structures such as liquid oxygen tank of the carrier rocket obtained the funding of the first “Innovation Project of China Welding Society Innovation Platform. In June of this year it won the first prize in the finals of the international welding competition which is called the “welding world cup”.
