A Student of HIT won the only Final Prize of the Kyoto International Manga Competition in Mainland China Division

In the 2017 Kyoto International Manga Competition held recently, “His and Her Frame” drawn by Song Yuan, an undergraduate student from the class of 2014   won the only final prize of the competition in the Mainland China division. Song Yuan currently studies in the media technology and art department of the School of Mechanical Engineering of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT). His work stood out among thousands of works submitted by many professional contestants.

Kyoto International Manga Competition is an influential international comic competition sponsored by the Kyoto International Animation Festival and receives thousands of works every year. 100 excellent cartoon works were preliminarily assessed. After that six works were selected and awarded candidate awards. One work received the final prize in each division. Compared with works of other professional comics artists who are experts in painting techniques, the work of Song Yuan was highly recognized by the competition judges due to its unique idea and ingenious design, winning the only final prize for Mainland China. In his speech at the award ceremony, Song Yuan said, “I would like to express my gratitude to HIT. I will try my best to draw manga which can compete with Japanese manga”.
