Laureates of the Turing Award, Manuel Blum and Joseph Sifakis Visited HIT

HIT’s vice-president, Ren Nanqi, recently held meetings with two laureates of the Turing Award: Manuel Blum, Professor of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University and Joseph Sifakis, Honorary Director of the French State Science Research Center.  He extended a warm welcome to each of the distinguished leaders, introducing them and their achievements.   Ren Nanqi inaugurated the “Internet of Things Laboratory” and awarded a letter of appointment to Joseph Sifakis as director of the new laboratory

Ren Nanqi shared his hope that Manuel Blum and Joseph Sifakis will contribute greatly to HIT’s goal of becoming a double first-class, internationally recognized university.  With their international influence, they will lead in the development of “Internet plus”, enhance collaboration in scientific research and the cultivation of rising talents. Each can bring to HIT innovation in international exchanges and cooperation.  Both Manuel Blum and Joseph Sifakis highly value the notable successes achieved by HIT, and hope to contribute in the development of HIT.

 Joseph Sifakis is Honorary Director of the French State Science Research Center.  He is the founder, director and honorary senior researcher of France Verimag. Formerly he served as a professor in École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne where he won the Turing Award in 2007.

 Manuel Blum is currently the Bruce Nelson Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.  He is the founder of the theory of complexity of computations. He received the Turing Award in 1995.

The “Internet of Things Laboratory” core research will be in the areas of the development of sensor nodes, networking protocol, data collection and processing.  The “Internet of Things Laboratory” will also focus on semantic parsing, security and network layering as major research fields.

Leaders from the International Cooperation Department and the HIT’s School of Computer Science and Technology attended the meetings.
