After a tough competition which included fourteen of the top domestic design organizations, Mei Hongyuan, leader of the National Engineering Survey and Design and a professor at HIT’s Architectural and Design Institute, led his team to the winning bid with the idea of “The Green Belt in Mount Tianshan, a Modern University in a New Era”.  It is anticipated that the new campus of Xinjiang University will open in 2020.

Not only is Xinjiang University the key university of the “Western Development strategy”, it is also a national “double first-class” university.  The new campus of Xinjiang University is located in Urumqi, covering an area of 260 hectares. Plans include the construction of nearly 1.25 million square meters of campus buildings. This will be one of the largest campus construction projects in China in the recent years. The construction of the new campus will complements perfectly “the Belt and Road” initiative to achieve common development.

Mei Hongyuan and his team designed a pattern of “two axis and one center” which blends with the heritage of the university. The center of the campus will be surrounded by four buildings. The overall development with mountains, rivers, and a panoramic view of the city convey a harmonious relationship with nature. It also achieves an imaginative space combining both the campus and scenery. It highlights design considerations with the local mountains, climate, history, and future displaying the natural beauty of the vast and magnificent mountains in Xinjiang. With this majestic design, Xinjiang University will bring advancement to western China, a first-class university in central Asia and fame on the world stage will be achieved!
