Recently, with HIT as the first signatory unit and Prof. Sun Fei of Prof. Gao Jihui's team as the title’s first author,  the research paper titled “In-situ high-content nitrogen-doped carbon Nano spheres on the construction of 4.5 V high energy density all-carbon lithium-ion capacitors with capacitive storage activity” was published in Nano Express, a well-known publication in the nanometer field. Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) combine the features of lithium-ion batteries and super capacitors.  They are expected to have excellent power and energy density, and life expectancy as well as prospects for a variety of applications in the future.

In order to solve the problems of charge transfer kinetics and “life matching” between two electrodes, Gao Jihui's team obtained a high concentration of nitrogen-doped carbon Nano spheres based on a continuous aerosol-assisted spray synthesizing technology.  This was used as a positive and negative electrode material for lithium ion capacitors.  In addition, they effectively resolve the electrochemical contradiction between the negative electrode storage lithium ion (Li+) and the positive electrode storage hexafluorophosphate (PF6-). The development potential and prospect for  application of high-voltage all-carbon symmetrical lithium ion capacitors are exponential.  In addition the team provided ideas for designing high-performance lithium ion capacitors by adjusting the chemical environment of carbon nanomaterials.

Sun Fei has followed Gao Jihui in developing carbon-based functional materials and research on the removal of pollutants. During his doctoral studies, he joined Professor Lu Yunfeng's research group at the University of California, Los Angeles.  With supervision from both professors he gradually expanded the carbon-based electrochemical storage capacity. His energetic research led to his selection and appointment in July 2017 as associate professor with Jiaojian of the university. In the past two years, the application of this research has led to more in-depth research, including the regulation of the chemical environment of carbon materials, controllable preparation of coal-based carbon materials, electrochemical energy storage, absorption of gas molecules, and recycling of pollutants. Related research has been published in Nano Research, Advanced Energy Materials, Material Chemistry, Science Reports, Power, Carbon Materials, and Chemical Engineering. Some of these papers are hot papers and ESI high-cited papers.

Gao Jihui's team has been conducting energy cleansing conversion and related research since 2006. At present, "carbon-based functional materials that integrate energy storage and pollutant control", "enhanced calcium-based/carbon-based materials for solar thermal conversion", "low-order coal steps, high-value conversion and utilization" and "concerns in energy conversion and utilization of quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics calculations of the process” are being investigated and studied.  In the past 5 years, the National Natural Science Foundation of China has undertaken 8 projects including the National Key Project and the Youth Fund Project. In 2017, based on the research in coal-based active coke pollutant removal, the team and Shenhua Group, Shandong University, jointly obtained the national key research and development special support for “smoke, coal, gas, and sulfur recovery and resource utilization technology.” In 2018, the team, together with Zhejiang University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, won the national key research and development special support for the “Control Technology of Organic Pollutants Emission from Coal-fired Processes”.
