On Saturday, June 2nd, 2018 in spite of sweltering heat, HIT’s pedestrian mall became a sea of people as thousands enjoyed HIT’s 4th Annual International Cultural Carnival. There was a wealth of dances, music, food, games and prizes. Students from more than 100 countries created a cultural "feast". Wang Shuquan, party secretary for HIT, joined the executive director of the US CET project, for the opening of the event.
HIT vice-president Ding Xuemei said in her speech that the carnival was designed to promote campus culture and to perpetuate a climate which embraces international exchange, and demonstrate the charm of HIT, which is a home to talents from home and abroad. The event demonstrates multiculturalism and enhances mutual understanding and awareness among students from different countries. It is a wonderful opportunity to enhance students’ awareness of international cooperation, expand their international horizons and improve international cultural exchange capabilities.
The opening ceremony was attended by Tan Lewei, Director of Pingfang District and Director of the Administrative Committee of the Economic Development Zone in Harbin, Liu Guojun, Director of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Foreign Affairs Office of Heilongjiang Province, Zong Xiyun, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation for the Department of Education of Heilongjiang Province, Zhang Yan, Director of the Chinese Program of the University of Wyoming, Kim Yong-guk, chairman of the Korean preparatory program, Mr. Vaughan, principal and representative of a Cambodian high school, as well as a teacher representative from a Russian high school. Heads of the relevant departments from HIT were also in attendance.
A variety of acts carefully prepared by students from various countries were performed on the main stage in front of the library. Performers interacted with the audience repeatedly. Their wonderful performances frequently won cheers from the audience. The pedestrian mall was lined with exhibition booths from a variety of cultures. Both Chinese and foreign students carefully prepared activities that represented the local culture at the various booths. There were also some traditional Chinese activities such as calligraphy, the tea ceremony, the Chinese zither as well as a host of excellent cultural performances including dance, food, songs and games. These activities attracted many visitors to our campus who lingered for hours.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the United States CET Harbin project. HIT also held HIT WEEK, an activity designed for students to experience life at HIT. In addition, to further strengthen cooperation between HIT and the local school district, students from the Baoguo Fourth Elementary School in Harbin Pingfang District were dressed in 56 Chinese ethnic costumes as they attended the event.
