HIT News (Liu Zhongkui / text) Recently, the "2511" First-class Discipline (Group) Construction Plan Series Expert Demonstration Meeting was held in the administrative building, which discussed the First-class Discipline (Group) Construction Plan for 2018 to 2020, and also proposed specifications for the next step in the plan. President Zhou Yu and Vice Presidents Han Jiecai, Ren Nanqi, An Shi and Xu Dianguo were in attendance, and Vice President Ding Xuemei presided over the meeting.

In his speech, President Zhou Yu put forward several requirements for the "2511" First-class Discipline (Group) Construction Plan. The first requirement is to strengthen discipline planning and top-level design, while adhering to the goals of appropriate scale, reasonable structure, distinctive features and excellent quality, and then make the program more concise, thus planning the interdisciplinary direction in the future. Second, the plan should adhere to the combination of the recent construction goals and the long-term construction goals, by clarifying the main content and tasks of discipline construction in each period, and coordinating development of the characteristic superior disciplines and the emerging interdisciplinary disciplines. The third requirement is to adhere to the principle of doing something while not doing everything, by highlighting the key points, focusing on the future, optimizing resources, innovating the organizational model of disciplines, and strengthening the mechanism of disciplinary development. In this way, the acceleration, upgrading, and improvement of the characteristic leading disciplines can be advanced. Fourth, the plan should focus on the intersection of emerging disciplines, by promoting the deep interdisciplinary integration of multiple disciplines, encouraging the construction of public research platforms and cutting-edge interdisciplinary platforms, planning a number of interdisciplinary research directions for major scientific and technological issues, and fostering more new growth points for discipline development and academic research. The fifth requirement is to enhance international construction, by promoting sustainable, high-level, deep substantive cooperation with world-class universities, first-class academic institutions and first-class scholars, and effectively integrating foreign high-quality educational resources into the whole process of discipline construction, thereby advancing the forefront of science and technology to produce more original innovations and achieve more key core technological breakthroughs. Moreover, the plan should raise resources through multiple channels in order to effectively integrate resources amongst the three campuses of the school, as well as continue to reinforce support for scientific research and discipline construction. The sixth requirement is to intensify reforms, by breaking down the barriers of interdisciplinary talent training, actively promoting interdisciplinary talent training, innovating talent training characteristics, deepening the reform of training models, and improving the quality of training. Finally, the plan should deepen the innovation of systems and mechanisms, and mobilize the enthusiasm, initiative and creativity of all kinds of talents to participate in the development and construction of the school, thereby accumulating energy for the future development of the discipline.

The heads of Mechanics, Materials Science and Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, High-end Equipment Manufacturing, Automation and Electronics, Aerospace Science and Engineering, and Big Data and Management Science respectively reported the three-year construction plan of each discipline (group) from the aspects of construction goals, major construction contents, key implementation plans, and construction plan recommendations. The participating experts put forward opinions and suggestions concerning the top-level design, cross-disciplines, concise discipline orientation, interdisciplinary talent training, management system innovation, teacher team construction, resources integration, and the strengthening of international exchanges and cooperation.

The heads of the discipline construction office, the heads of the “double first-class” construction departments, the experts of the school, the heads of the participating leading nine disciplines (group), the members of the lead construction group of each discipline (group), and the core teachers of each disciplines participated in the meeting.
