The Sino-Russian Joint Campus of Harbin Institute of Technology Founded, Opening a New Chapter of Higher Education Cooperation and Exchange between China and Russia

On the afternoon of June 7th, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Harbin Institute of Technology, a foundation laying ceremony of Sino-Russian joint campus of HIT was held, opening a new chapter of higher education cooperation and exchange between China and Russia. Wang Wentao, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Heilongjiang Provincial Committee and Governor of Heilongjiang Province, Vladimir Oshepkov, Consul General of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Harbin, Wang Zhaoli, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Heilongjiang Provincial Committee and Secretary of the CPC Harbin Municipal Committee, Sun Dongsheng, Deputy Governor of Heilongjiang Province, Sun Zhe, Mayor of Harbin, Wang Dongguang, Secretary General of Heilongjiang Provincial Government, Nikolay Kropachev, Rector of St Petersburg State University, Xiong Sihao, Chairman of University Council and Zhou Yu, President of HIT attended the foundation laying ceremony.

Nikolay Kropachev, rector of St Petersburg State University, delivered a speech via video link, congratulating all the teachers and students of HIT on the centennial anniversary. He said that after a hundred years of development, HIT has become one of the most famous universities in China. The foundation of Sino-Russian joint campus will promote the cultivation of high-level talents in the two universities, and more effectively accomplish the specific tasks under the priority development framework determined by the heads of China and Russia. In the future, the two universities will make concerted efforts to learn from the advanced experience in the field of education and scientific research in China and Russia, so as to build a world-class joint campus and upgrade the cooperation between the two universities to a new level.

In honor of the ceremony of laying the foundation of the Sino-Russian Joint Campus, Nikolay Kropachev planted a plum, which will serve as a reminder that St Petersburg University has another campus in China.

During the ceremony, the rector of St Petersburg State University noted that in Chinese there is a stable expression "peaches and plums filled the Celestial Empire" (Chinese 桃李满天下), which symbolizes a teacher or educational institution, which has many worthy students around the world. “Now the Joint Campus of St Petersburg State University and HIT will begin to generously give“ peaches and plums ”to Russia and China,” the rector emphasized.

Zhou Yu, President of HIT, said in his speech that China and Russia are good neighbors with tight links, good friends for mutual help and good partners for sincere cooperation. Meeting the major strategic needs of China and Russia and standing at the world’s scientific and technological frontier, in order to build a joint training and high-level innovation research base for China’s and Russia’s elite talents, and to promote the economic and technological development of the two countries, the two universities jointly build the Sino-Russian joint campus with the focus on the high-level joint education between China and Russia.

The foundation laying ceremony was presided over by Xiong Sihao. Leaders at the ceremony jointly earthed up and laid the foundation for the Sino-Russian joint campus.

Han Jiecai, Executive Vice President of HIT, An Shi, Deputy Chairman of University Council and Vice President of HIT, Xu Dianguo, Vice President of HIT, Yao Limin, Deputy Chairman of University Council and Secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection, Liu Hong, Vice President of HIT, and Fan Feng, Assistant to the President, attended the foundation laying ceremony.

Relevant leaders and guests from the Heilongjiang Provincial People’s Government, the Harbin Municipal People’s Government, the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Harbin, as well as representatives of faculty from St Petersburg State University and Harbin Institute of Technology attended the foundation laying ceremony. Faculty and students from two universities watched the ceremony online and offline.
