HIT joins the Association of Pacific Rim Universities

HIT News (Cai Zhen / text)Recently, our university formally joined the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. As another important platform to support our university's "double first-class" construction, joining the association is of great significance to promote our university's international cooperation and exchange. In the meanwhile, itsets up a wider flat for our teachers and students’active participation in international academic organizationsso as to motivate our university cultivate globally competent talents.

Up to now, APRU Membership is comprised of 56 leading universities, including California Institute of Technology, the University of Melbourne,Waseda University and so on.Among them, mainland China provides 10 spots (Fudan University, Harbin Institute of Technology,Nanjing University,Peking University,Shanghai Jiao Tong University,Tsinghua University,University of Chinese Academy of Sciences,University of Science and Technology of China,Xi’an Jiaotong University,Zhejiang University). Hong Kong SAR accounts for three positions (the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Hong Kong). Besides, two universitiesin Taiwan--National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, are also key members of APRU.

APRU was established in Los Angeles in 1997 by the presidents of UCLA, Berkeley, Caltech and the University of Southern California (USC), which is a premier alliance of top research universities from around the Pacific Rim. This academic organization,whose purpose is to establish a platform for exchange and common development for member universities, has developed into a joint organization of more than 50 top-ranking universities in the Asia-Pacific region. As an official advisory body to APEC, the association provides advice and counsel on science, technology and human resources to assist APEC in creating a community of Pacific Rim countries. APRU has set its strategic framework to build higher education and research in the Asia-Pacific region,to develop global leaders and to collaborate in the solutionsof problems and challenges of the Asia-Pacific region.
