HIT News (Written by Ji Xuan)—On September 22, the Royal Academy of Engineering announced the list of newly elected academicians in 2020. Among the 50 newly elected academicians and 3 foreign academicians, there are 7 Chinese scholars. Among them, the only female is Professor Sun Tong, an alumni of Harbin Institute of Technology and City College, University of London. President Zhou Yu sent a congratulatory letter to Sun Tong.
Sun Tong, comes from Danyang, Jiangsu Province, graduated from Danyang Middle School of Jiangsu Province in 1986 and entered the Department of Precision Instruments of Harbin Institute of Technology. She obtained bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctor’s degree respectively in 1990, 1993 and 1998. In 1996, she received a scholarship from the City University of London for further study. In 1999, she received a doctor’s degree in Applied Physics.
Sun Tong is now working in City College, University of London. In 2008, she became the first female professor of engineering in the University since its establishment in 1894. She has been engaged in the research and application of new optical fiber sensors for many years. As an expert in the field, she has published more than 330 papers in world professional journals and international conferences. She has obtained more than 50 scientific research projects of various types from the UK and EU, and has established long-term cooperative relations with China, EU, India and Australia in the research and application of this field.
In view of her outstanding contribution in the field of engineering, on June 9, 2018, Sun Tong was awarded OBE (Order of the British Empire) on the Queen’s Birthday Honors List, and attended the medal ceremony at Buckingham Palace on October 17, 2018. On September 22, 2020, Sun Tong was selected as a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
