HIT Alumnus Peng Shilu Won the Achievement Award of the 13th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award

HIT News(Ji Xuan/text, Internet/photo) The 13th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award ceremony was held in Beijing on Nov. 8. Academician Peng Shilu, a nuclear power expert and alumnus of our university, was awarded the achievement award of the 13th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award.

Peng Shilu was born in Haifeng county, Shanwei city, Guangdong province in 1925, the son of revolutionary martyr Peng Pai. He studied in HIT in 1949. Then he graduated from Moscow Chemical Machinery Institute in 1956. After returning to China in 1958, he has been engaged in the research and design of nuclear power. He is one of the pioneers and founders in the field of nuclear power in China. He has presided over the design and construction of China's first land model reactor for nuclear submarines, moreover, he has successfully developed the first nuclear submarine and organized the introduction of the first megawatt-class nuclear power station. Besides, he has directed the independent design and construction of the first large-scale commercial nuclear power station, making outstanding contributions to the  historic breakthrough for China's nuclear submarines and the determination of technical route of the first nuclear power station. He has won honors such as the special prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the National Science Conference award, the honorary certificate of "making outstanding contributions to the national defense science and technology cause", the Science and Technology Progress Award of the He Liang He Lee Foundation and the Science and Technology Achievement Award of the He Liang He Lee Foundation. He was elected member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1994. He was a delegate to the 11th, 12th, and 13th Party Congresses, an alternate member of the CPC Central Committee, a delegate to the 4th and 8th National People's Congress, a member of the standing Committee of the 8th National People's Congress, and a member of the NPC Environmental Protection and Resources Committee.

"Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award" is initiated by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, approved by the State Office of Science and Technology Awards, and managed by the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award Foundation. It is known as the "highest award in China's engineering field". Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award includes the Achievement Award, the Special Contribution Award and the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award, which are awarded every two year. The award was first awarded in 1996. So far, it has been held for 13 times. A total of 304 scientists and one group have won the prize. Only seven scientists, including Zhang Guangdou, Shi Changxu, Zhu Guangya, Pan Jiazheng, Qian Zhengying, Zhong Nanshan and Xu Kuangdi, have won the achievement award of Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award.
