HIT On October 22, the inorganic all-solid-state electrochromic device developed by the Center for Composite Materials of the School of Astronautics completed its first space performance and function verification.

It is the first time that China has carried out the performance verification of electrochromic technology under the space environment. The technical product was launched into space on October 14th by the VDES satellite which was launched into the scheduled orbit by the Long March 2 D rocket. This trial successfully verified the regulation capacities of light and heat of electrochromic technology in multi-dimensional stress fields in space, thus laying a solid foundation for the intelligent thermal control of spacecraft in the future, and simultaneously marking a new stage for the development of China's electrochromic technology in the field of space applications.

Led by Academician Du Shanyi, the Center for Composite Materials of the School of Astronautics has made major contribution to China’s space development by taking "advocating morality and improving performance, applying the principles to practical use" as its development concept, “serving as the pillar of the country” as its mission.

The electrochromic device carried into space on October 22 was developed by the Li Yao’s team of the Center for Composite Materials, and Dr. Zhang Xiang was responsible for the technical breakthrough. The team has ever been engaged in photothermal control functional composite materials and application research, including electrochromic, thermochromic and bionic photothermal control metamaterials.
