HIT is deeply committed to implementing the national strategy for opening up education.It is striving to create exemplary models of Chinese-foreign cooperative education and establish international paradigms for talent cultivation, forming nine ongoing cooperative programs and one cooperative institution. 

In May 2025, two new Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools programs were established with Hanyang University in South Korea. HIT has consistently achieved breakthroughs in student development and research collaboration, setting benchmarks for foundational disciplines such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry, as well as specialized fields including environmental science, big data management, smart architecture, naval architecture, design, smart materials and structures, digital media arts, and communication engineering. These endeavors represent exemplary contributions to the internationalization of higher education in China.

On June 7, 2020, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sino-Russian Joint Campus washeld. In March 2022, three joint undergraduate programs in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, and Chemistry, developed by HIT and Saint-Petersburg University, wereapproved simultaneously by the Ministry of Education of China. As of the end of 2024, these programs enrolled a total of 433 students, striving to establish a flagship initiative for Sino-Russian basic science talent cultivation.

In August 2023, the opening ceremony of the first Sino-French class was held for the 'Big Data Management and Application' cooperative undergraduate program jointly run by the Harbin Institute of Technology and Emlyon Business School.

In 2025, Alberto Sapora, vice president of Polytechnic University of Turin, engaged in an exchange with student representatives from the Class of 2024 in the Smart Architecture and Constructionprogram.

The CFCRS Undergraduate Education Program in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, co-organized by HIT and the University of Strathclyde, began enrolling students in 2020, with an annual intake of 35 students. Among the first cohort of 34 graduates, 91.18 percent pursued further studies, with 16 of them (47 percent) admitted to the top 20 universities worldwide for postgraduate education.
